For years the America-hating Left said that all the killing in Iraq (and elsewhere in the Middle East, for that matter) was the result of U.S. intervention in their affairs. The U.S. is now gone, yet the Muslim-on-Muslim violence continues, just as it has since the days of Muhammad's earliest successors.

Oh, I know. The Left will predictably respond saying that Christian-on-Christian violence has also occurred since the days of Christianity's founder. They fail to understand, however, that generally speaking, those who commit violence in the name of Christianity are not following Jesus' example and are behaving in direct violation of his teachings. Those who commit violence in the name of Islam are following their founder's example and acting in direct obedience to his teachings.

There is an Obamacare mandate that requires even religious (Catholic) organizations to provide coverage for contraception. I'm not Catholic and I don't have a problem with contraception, but a government mandate requiring religious organizations to violate their fundamental religious convictions is unconstitutional, unAmerican, and even tyrannical!

If the Obama administration had their way, not only would they force religious organizations to provide coverage for contraception in violation of their religious convictions, they would also force religious organizations to hire people whose behaviors are considered to be abominable to many Christians, and would force Christian hospitals, doctors and nurses to perform abortions in violation of their religious convictions.

Many Christians brush these things off because they are not immediately affected by such mandates. I would remind them of the words attributed to a German pastor under the Nazi rule of Germany:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Mitt Romney has always seemed to be a relatively calm and reasonable candidate. Considering his recent barrage of what almost appears to be desperate attacks on Newt Gingrich, Romney must be feeling like his chances of the nomination could be slipping away.

Although I think both Romney and Gingrich would be light-years better than the President we have now, they are both enormously wealthy career politicians who tend to lead by sticking their wetted finger in the air to see which way the political winds are blowing. Not only that, but Romney's flippant offer of a ten thousand dollar bet leads to suspicion that Romney really has no idea what average American's go through.

If America really wants a President who is grounded on core convictions rather than on the changing tide of political winds (mixed metaphor), and who is more in touch with average people, I think the choice is between Michele Bachmann or Rick Santorum. Unfortunately, most Americans seem to have bought into the media nonsense and lies portraying Bachmann and Santorum as unstable, far Right loonies.

The fact that this nonsense has gained any traction at all demonstrates how far Left this country has gone in the last 50 years. If you want to know where the Left will ultimately take us, just take a good hard look at the Occupy movement.

What's next? Acceptance of pedophilia and incest as "alternative lifestyles"? Oh, I know--some will mock such an idea. But only 30 years ago the idea that homosexual sex would not only be accepted but promoted in our public schools, would have been considered outrageous. Until now, the idea that our Congress would allow bestiality in the military would have been mocked. And yet, here we are.

No more right to a fair trial

As I understand it, John McCain is supporting a "proposed amendment to the pending defense authorization bill that could allow American citizens who are suspected of terrorism to be denied a civilian trial."

Suspected by whom?

Just think how handy this would have been back in the McCarthy era! The President could have just declared all those Hollywood actors "terrorists" and have them shipped off to a military prison with no rights to a civilian trial.

President Obama could just have charges against TEA Party activists--or political opponents--trumped up in order to have them sent to Gitmo to be held without the right to defend themselves in civilian court.

Some future President could just determine that Christian fundamentalists are no different than Muslim fundamentalists and and are all suspect.

This proposal sounds as unconstitutional as it is scary!

This kid walked up to an openly gay classmate in his school and shot him in the head! He gets 25 years in prison and will be out by the time he's 42. The prosecutors probably got the best sentence they could get, but he should have received the death penalty.

We can disagree about the morality (or lack thereof) of homosexual behavior but there should be no disagreement about society having zero tolerance for murder--and in my opinion, only 25 years in prison for cold-blooded murder is too much tolerance.

One thing puzzles me though. After she got out she helped to chain four mentally handicapped people in her basement in an attempt to steal their Social Security checks.

I'm not a Ron Paul supporter but I certainly agree with him on this!

Although the Environmental Protection Agency is not in the cabinet, I would also suggesting a total make-over of that department as well. It needs a complete philosophy change to make it more of a people protection agency.

In other words, this agency needs to have the ultimate goal not of protecting the environment, but protecting people. This agency should always weigh environmental concerns with human needs. In some cases the agency should come down on the side of the environment--as, for example, when some company is pouring toxic chemicals into the rivers. In other cases, people's jobs and livelihood should take priority over, for example, the existence snail darters or the comfort of caribou in the swamps of the Alaskan north slope.

Admittedly, it would often be hard to know where to draw the line, but the way it is now, it seems like the Environmental Protection Agency is overrun by radical tree-huggers who are much more concerned about "Mother Earth", i.e. trees, rocks and animals, than they are about human beings.

In light of the Iranian government's recent attempt at terrorism on American soil I have to ask, how is that working out for you Mr. President?

Iran understands force. They do not care about sanctions or negotiations. If the United States does not respond in a way that lets Iran know in no uncertain terms that such acts of war will not be tolerated, Iran will be emboldened to continue their attacks against us.

We should negotiate with Iran, and while we are negotiating we should be amassing such an enormous military force in their neighborhood that it will encourage them to listen to reason.

One month to the day after the 10th anniversary of 9/11 comes a sobering moment in the history of the U.S. war on terror: The Department of Justice has charged that "factions of the Iranian government" plotted to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States by blowing him up inside a Washington, D.C., restaurant.

Had it succeeded, this would have constituted an act of terror by the Islamic Republic of Iran on U.S. soil, and arguably an act of war.

Those who planned to carry out this act of terror reportedly came up through Mexico with the help of a Mexican drug cartel.

It is worth noting that this is just the kind of thing that Republicans have warned about, and that Democrats have poo-pooed. It is just the kind of thing that some Republicans have tried hard to stop with stronger border enforcement--only to be opposed at every turn by Democrats.

I suspect that our President will respond very strongly to this act of war--perhaps with a powerful and strongly worded speech. I also suspect that if John McCain had been President, the government of Iran wouldn't have dared to attempt such a thing on U.S. soil.

I hope I'm wrong about our President. If Obama does not provide some kind of significant response, Iran will just be emboldened to try again. If we are afraid to respond to Iran in the face of an act of war now, what will we do when they have nuclear weapons?

UPDATE: I just heard Secretary of State Clinton vowing to take action to isolate Iran even further. Whoa! I'm sure the Ayatollahs are shaking in their boots now!

Is the Mormon Church a cult as Rick Perry's pastor claims?

Rick Perry's Baptist pastor recently created a controversy when he called the Mormons a cult. Mitt Romney and others have vigorously protested.

The interesting thing about this is that Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and--and far as I know--virtually the entire Mormon Church has always considered Mormonism to be the one true church, and orthodox Christianity to have been apostate as far back as the second century (that's "orthodox" with a small "o" as opposed to the Orthodox Church). Yet, Mormons now apparently want to be considered part of Christianity.

So which is it? Is the Mormon Church just another legitimate branch of Christianity or is the Mormon Church the one true church and all the rest are apostate? They can't have it both ways--unless perhaps they teach one thing to their members and another thing publicly for political purposes.

The fact is that ever since the time of Joseph Smith, orthodox Christians have always considered Mormonism to be a cult and Mormons have always considered orthodox Christians to be apostate.

This is only a big story to religiously illiterate Americans who don't understand Christianity, and to journalists who need to stir up controversy to maintain their ratings.

As far as the election is concerned, I think Christians need to focus on the issues. Just because a candidate is Christian does not necessarily mean he or she would be a good President (after all, Jimmy Carter claimed to be a born again Christian (and Baptist), and yet he turned out to be one of the worst Presidents in American history).

Although Mitt Romney is a Mormon, he would be much, MUCH better than the President we currently have, (who claims to be a Christian).

Personally, I don't like Romney as a candidate nearly as well as I like Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, or even Rick Perry, but if Romney gets the nomination, I will have no problem supporting him for President over Obama.

The Campaign Finance and Disclosure Board on Tuesday approved a new "statement of guidance" on how the state's laws on political fundraising should be applied to ballot measure campaigns. The board says in some circumstances, groups funded by private donations that take sides on ballot measures will have to report the exact source of those donations with the state.

In California when opponents of gay marriage were made public they were often subject to intimidation and even violence by gay rights advocates. Why do I suspect that this is precisely the point of this new Minnesota legislation, i.e. to intimidate those who might donate to pass traditional family legislation.

Isn't it interesting how the Left is so adamant about the "right to privacy" when it comes to a woman's "right" to kill her unborn baby, but they trample over privacy rights when it comes to the privacy of donors or the rights of workers to have a private ballot when voting on unions?

BET founder: Stop attacking the rich

On Fox News Sunday the founder of BET said that Obama needs to stop attacking the rich.

He is right. Marxists and Obama followers tend to demonize the "rich" and romanticize the "poor."

The fact is that while some rich people are corrupt, some are good people who provide lots of jobs and give lots of money to charity. And while some of the poor are good, hardworking people who are poor through no fault of their own, some are poor because of their own laziness or bad behavior issues.

There's nothing wrong with generalizations, of course. But Obama's generalizations regarding rich and poor seem to be designed to foment a class warfare agenda for the purposes of justifying government robbery from the rich in order to redistribute that wealth to the poor.

One of the problems with this agenda is that when you redistribute money to the "poor" without addressing the reasons that some people are poor in the first place, you tend to enable and perpetuate the very poverty you are pretending to address.

Unfortunately, some Democrat politicians don't seem to care, because keeping people on the government dole helps to keep those people dependent on the politicians who support those handouts, which helps keep those Democrat politicians in power.

Muhammad himself personally ordered the execution of some who had turned back from his new religion of Islam. The difference in the Iranian case is that this pastor has never been Muslim! The Iranian supreme court is demanding that the pastor "return" to the religion of his "ancestors."

Anyone who has read Recliner Commentaries for very long, knows that I think President Obama is one of the worst Presidents of all time, and yet, I think this billboard is despicable.

We can disagree with our President. We can attack his policies. We can point out his inconsistencies, flaws and even lies. But to depict him as a crying baby in a diaper crosses the line. It not only disrespects the office of the Presidency but it reflects poorly on "we the people."

We can strongly disagree and advocate for our position without personally insulting and demeaning the man. I think Republicans should strongly denounce this disgusting and hateful ad campaign.
