Barack Obama's ostrich politics

How is Obama promoting ostrich politics? Let me count the ways:

Bill Clinton assured us that Iraq was pursuing WMD. The CIA (led by an appointee of a Democratic president), assured us that Iraq had WMD. England’s intelligence agencies assured us that Iraq had WMD. Other European intelligence agencies said the same. There is no doubt that Iraq was a state sponsor of terror. But Obama is proud of the fact that even though other Democrats voted for the war, he was against the war! What about next time? Would Obama stick his head in the sand and wait until someone actually unleashed WMD on us before acting? Would he even act then? Ostrich politics!

When the United States suddenly packed up and left Vietnam, thousands of innocent people were left at the mercy of our enemies and were ruthlessly slaughtered. Barack Obama wants to stick his head in the sand and do the same thing to innocent people in Iraq. Ostrich politics!

Syria wants to destroy Israel. Hezbollah wants to destroy Israel. Hamas wants to destroy Israel. Fatah wants to destroy Israel. Pakistan has nukes and is in turmoil. Al Qaeda wants to destroy both Israel AND the West. Iran wants to destroy both Israel AND the West. And Barack’s plan is to have a big summit conference and talk about it! Sounds good! Maybe we could offer everyone some kitties and ponies while we’re talking. Naive, ostrich politics!

Obama’s website says he plans to double our foreign aid! Does he honestly think this will help America’s image? We already give billions in foreign aid and it does nothing for our image! Why should he think that doubling that amount will. Ostrich politics!

Obama’s website says he will make “a sustained push—working with Israelis and Palestinians—to achieve the goal of two states…” Not too many years ago Israel pretty much offered to give up the farm so to speak, in order to have peace with the Palestinians. The Palestinians rejected every offer! They do not want peace—they want the destruction of Israel. We don’t have to guess about this. This is what they say openly! Obama is living in a dangerous fantasy land. Ostrich politics!

Obama’s web site says, “Obama believes that we must talk openly about nuclear weapons – because the best way to keep America safe is not to threaten terrorists with nuclear weapons, it's to keep nuclear weapons away from terrorists.” Hmmm, why hasn’t anyone else ever thought about keeping nuclear weapons away from terrorists? But what a good plan Obama has! If we just “talk openly about nuclear weapons” and stop threatening terrorists, everything will be OK. Ostrich politics!

Obama’s web site says that “Obama will crack down on nuclear proliferation by strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty so that countries like North Korea and Iran that break the rules will automatically face strong international sanctions. Hmmm, good idea. Sanctions certainly kept North Korea from getting Nuclear weapons….oh, wait. Bad example! They now have nuclear weapons! Ostrich politics!

Obama’s website says that “Obama strongly believes that our foreign policy is stronger when Americans are united, and the government is open and candid with the American people.” I see, so if our President was just more candid, all Americans would be more united? What nonsense! Ostrich politics!

According to his website, Obama wants to:

* Provide a “Making work pay” tax credit for Americans to give them free government money (which, like the recent rebate approved by Democrats and Republicans, is just taking money from one of your pockets so they can put it back in your other pocket and make themselves look generous in the process)

* Increase the minimum wage and tie it to inflation

* Expand the earned income tax credit to give even more tax money back

* Force employers to provide more family and medical leave for their workers (whether small companies can afford it or not)

* Provide 1.5 billion to help states adopt paid leave systems

* Expand the child and dependent care tax credit

* Provide federal funding for afterschool programs and 21st century learning centers

* Increase “federal incentives” for telecommuting

* Invest “$10 billion per year to create: Early Learning Challenge Grants

* Double our aid to foreign countries

* “ensure that all children have access to pre-school”

* “provide affordable and high-quality [read government controlled] child care”

* “provide service scholarships” for teachers

* “ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans [that is, for those who do not chose to go to a religious college…although Christians and Jews pay taxes too, Obama’s program only covers those who get government indoctrination, er, education]

* Provide universal health legislation…that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage” [high quality like that in Canada?]

* Give a 10% tax credit to an additional 10 million homeowners

* “double federal funding for basic research”

* Double energy research and development funding

* “make the research and development tax credit permanent”

* Increase funding for federal workforce training programs

* “create an energy-focused youth jobs program”

* Invest $150 billion over the next ten years in clean energy

* “invest $1 billion over five years in transitional jobs and career pathway programs,”

* “ensure that low-income Americans have transportation access to jobs,”

* “ensure that ex-offenders have access to job training, substance abuse and mental health counseling, and employment opportunities,” [can’t afford mental health counseling? Just rob a store and the government will pay the bill!],

* “create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund to develop affordable housing in mixed-income neighborhoods,”

* “fund the Community Development Block Grant program,”

* “create 20 Promise Neighborhoods” which will provide “a full network of services, including early childhood education, youth violence prevention efforts and after-school activities, to an entire neighborhood from birth to college” [emphasis mine],

* Eliminate the income tax for seniors making less than $50,000,

* “increase funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP),”

* Keep all veterans from being homeless,

* “fully fund the VA and “establish a world-class VA Planning Division to avoid future budget shortfalls,”

* “improve mental health care at every stage of military services.”

* Recruit more health professionals, for the military

* Make strengthening our transportation systems, including our roads and bridges, a top priority.”

And this is only a partial list of what Obama wants to spend your money on! Frankly, I even like some of Obama’s proposals, and some of them would benefit me directly. But why stop here? Why not just offer cradle to grave medical, dental, housing, clothing, food, transportation and education for all Americans, even for those who are “motivationally challenged” and don’t really want to work for a living? There are several things about this list that some Obama supporters don’t seem to understand.

First, the government doesn’t pay for all of this. It comes out of YOUR paycheck!

Second, these programs are not like funding the Iraq war. When the war is over, the funding stops. Obama sticks his head in the sand and ignores the fact that once government entitlement programs get established, they are never over. They just get bigger and bigger and more and more expensive—and often, more and more riddled with government bureaucratic bungling and corruption! Obama sticks his head in the sand and ignores the fact that government often messes up just about every program it touches.

Third, make no mistake about it, what government funds, government controls so we are giving up more and more of our freedom to the nanny state. While other countries are discovering that socialism/communism doesn’t work, Obama sticks his head in the sand and ignores this reality on his way to making America socialist!

Fourth, Obama seems to be promising everything to everyone in order to get elected. He sticks his head in the sand and is either too naive or too deceptive to acknowledge the fact that there is no way he could deliver on all this--not even if his Congress was controlled by Democrats! Ostrich politics!

Finally, Obama’s website says he will stop the development of nuclear weapons and “will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons, and pursue it.” What a great idea! I’m wondering, though. When we think all the nuclear weapons have been destroyed, including ours, what happens when we discover that the bad guys were able to conceal five or ten of theirs? Game over. We’re dead. Terminal ostrich politics!

This is going to take a long time to respond to, so I'll have to go point by point.

Here's Obama's response to your third paragraph (the one about the kitties and the ponies).

"We have to realize that the entire Middle East has a huge stake in the outcome of Iraq, and that we have to engage neighboring countries in finding a solution. Now, I believe that includes opening dialogue both Syria and Iran. We know these countries want us to fail. I'm under no illusions there, but I also know that neither Syria nor Iran want to see a security vacuum in Iraq filled with chaos, and terrorism, and refugees and violence, since those could have a destabilizing effect on the entire region, including within their own countries. So, even as we remain steadfast in our opposition to their support of terrorism, even as we continue to put pressure on Iran to stand down on its nuclear ambitions, it's absolutely critical that we talk to the Syrians and the Iranians about playing a more constructive role in Iraq."

The question is - what do you do when they're a major factor in the distabilization? Iran in particular got caught with its hand in the cookie jar a few times. Talking with them about region stability might make sense, but only if you're going to press them on the fact that they're one of reasons there is an issue.

Interesting list, lacking focus, using the "ostrich politics" phrase where it doesn't apply, etc. I could go point by point (L'oiseau, if you have more time and patience than I do more power to you), but the very first paragraph tells me that it wouldn't be worth it. Even though Obama was right about Iraq (and despite what you believe, there was credible evidence at the time that at least some of the President's claims were cherry-picked or flat-out wrong), you rake him over the coals. He can't win with you, so why should I bother even discussing this mishmash of criticisms?

Because writing it might convince someone else who is reading AND this is a blog... where we do that sort of thing. :P

Reading this list does really reinforce Obama's campaign slogan of CHANGE. And when he is president, I am confident that we will all get CHANGE. In fact, after taxes that is all we will have left is CHANGE. Small CHANGE; nickels, dimes and quarters!

Robert: I know, but I only have so much time and energy to put into commenting on a blog. Maybe I'll be more motivated the closer we get to November. :-)
