At a recent conference, Ann Coulter is reported as saying, "I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I'm - so, kind of at an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards, so I think I'll just conclude here and take your questions" (CNN).
Coulter was undoubtedly trying to make a humorous point about the extent to which political correctness has impinged on freedom of speech in this country, but it is still hard to hard to understand how such an otherwise intelligent woman can be so dense and insensitive as to say something like this. Her personal attack undoubtedly genuinely offended many people needlessly and contributed absolutely nothing positive to the discussion.
On the other hand, I’m not too concerned about all the Leftist political pundits who pretend to be offended purely for political advantage. After all, it is hard to take such feigned outrage too seriously when the Left didn’t seem too upset when John Edwards hired two virulently anti-Christian bloggers on his staff. Nor did the Left get upset when Rosie O’Donnell compared conservative Christians to terrorists or when Bill Maher recently implied that that the world would be better off with Dick Cheney dead. And when John Kerry implied that U.S. military men and women were too stupid to get other employment, many on the Left accepted his excuse that he was just trying to be funny.
Make no mistake about it, while some were genuinely offended, many others are just sharks sensing blood in the water.

I think she did it because she's a rah-rah cheerleader pretending to hold an extreme position in order to sell books and book more speaking engagements. Her pandering, insensitivity, and extremism makes her rich.
