Read the rest in the Jeruslaem Post.A number of Christian families have finally decided to break their silence and
talk openly about what they describe as Muslim persecution of the Christian
minority in this city. The move comes as a result of increased attacks on Christians by Muslims over the past few months. The families said they wrote letters to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the Vatican, Church leaders and European governments complaining about the attacks, but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears.
According to the families, many Christians have long been afraid to complain in public about the campaign of "intimidation" for fear of retaliation by their Muslim neighbors and being branded "collaborators" with Israel.
But following an increase in attacks on Christian-owned property in the city over the past few months, some Christians are no longer afraid to talk about the ultra-sensitive issue. And they are talking openly about leaving the city.

Palestinians and persecution
The United Nations, European governments, and Leftists are so concerned about the treatment of terrorists at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, why don't they say anything about Muslim persecution of innocent Christians in Palestine?

As for why many people in this country seem more concerned about some of the questionable things our government does (your so-called "Leftists"), I can think of several reasons off the top of my head: 1) we like to think we're better than these other places in the world where many rights and freedoms aren't available; 2) it's closer to home, so we're more aware; 3) the questionable things our government does are in our names. Now, it's important to recognize injustice wherever it occurs, both here and around the world. But if your question is why it seems like some are only worried about what our government does, my question to you would be why does it seem you're never concerned about wrongs committed by the U.S. government in your name? (And if you are, why do you virtually never write about it?)
What would you know about what "leftists" (translation: the other 72% of the country) since all you ever read are right-wing rags?
John, I think all of your points are valid but I don't think they explain the terrible imbalance in reporting.
The problem is that the absolutely horendous stuff going on around the world makes Abu Ghraib and the water boarding at Guantanamo Bay seem like a slaps on the wrist by comparison.
Should we be concerned about our government's mistreatment of terrorists? Of course, but I don't think I need to focus on it because the mainstream media already gives it more than enough attention.
If the mainstream media even devoted half as much attention to the atrocities regularly committed against innocent people in the rest of the world as they do to the mistreatment of terrorists by our government, I would stop complaining.
The fact, however, is that while the media (including FoxNews) spends months talking about the humiliation of terrorists at Abu Ghraib, for example, we hear absolutely nothing about all the beatings, rapes, torture, slavery, honor killings, etc. that regularly take place in many countries while their governments often look the other way or actively participate!
This terribly one-sided reporting leads clueless Americans (usually Liberal Americans) to start bying the "America is the great satan" garbage spewed out by our enemies.
Anonymous: First, I've actually read and watched enough Leftist garbage to choke an elephant but you do raise a good point--maybe I should devote more time to reporting and debunking their sewage. So much news--so little time!
Second, everyone else on this blog usually contributes intelligent discussion, even those like John who regularly disagree with me. You might strive to follow their example rather than just slinging your hateful barbs.
Dennis, you make some reasonable points as well, but you lose me at the end. To say (some) liberals think America is the "great satan" is the kind of rhetoric that gets in the way of a lot of reasonable discussion in this country today. Sure, there are a few nutjobs out there, but they exist on both sides. It would be the equivalent of someone on the left saying that "clueless Americans (usually Conservative Americans) believe that gays are to blame for 9/11." Yeah, there are a couple of idiots who have said this, but to pass it off as representative of a majority is irresponsible.
What have any one of us done about any of this stuff?
Who cares what you think about it... what have you done?
Making people aware is good... but who acts? Do you form opinions and hold to them because it makes you feel safer and more in control? What if there really are no good answers...
I just wanted to pop in and say that I really like reading John's posts. They're typically well thought out and he isn't just spewing rhetoric. He's a well informed counter opinion to this blog and I think he provides valuable input so that we're not "preaching to the choir".
Thanks John.
Thanks Robert, I appreciate the kind words.
Kevin, I sympathize with the sentiment behind what you're saying, but you seem to be implying that only issues that one has personally tried to contribute a solution to are open for thought or debate.
John, no I'm not implying that there is no place for academic debate about an issue. I think that too much academic debate about real issues without any action raises some interesting questions about motivations and the real value obtained from the debate. Debating other people's situation as a form of entertainment?
Upon self reflection I wonder how many of my strong opinions about particular issues are only strong because I gain some psychic value from the debate or framing the question and not actually addressing the problem directly. I was just thinking out loud...
I see your points Kevin - you raise some good issues. But you have to remember that everyone has to have an opinion about everything these days. :)
Kevin, I think you raise a good point. Personally, I keep informed, I often lead my classes in prayer for those in other countries who are suffering, I have given money to organizations like World Vision or Samaritan's Purse which work to provide for people's physical needs overseas, and I have occasionally sent e-mail's to my elected representatives and on two occasions had the opportunity to raise the issue of persecution in Sudan personally to a congressman and U.S. Senator.
