Gee, I wonder if our proposed "fence" betwist us and Mexico will accomplish the same level of illegal alien reduction?

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain this.... If the border is around 2,000 miles (give or take) and the fence is 700 miles long, couldn't people just ... walk around it? It seems almost comical, but maybe I'm missing something.

hJohn,

Its designed to stop children, the elderly and the infirm who can't walk around it--you know, the really dangerous ones :-)

You're right. I'm not sure I get it either. I suspect it will increase border traffic on the ends. Is 700 miles just the initial installment or is that all they're going to do?

Dennis, from the perspective of those who are against immigration because of the drain it puts on our society the children, the elderly, and the infirmed are the dangerous one because they are going to cost more to educate or provide medical care to.

The wall does help stop immigration some. It's hard to walk through the desert. By creating a wall people have to travel farther to enter. It also helps focus government resources on the ends of the wall... b/c that is where you'd expect to see the most people... so to avoid border security you're going to have to walk a long long way.

Of course, for a well funded terrorist organization travelling will not be such a big problem, although they'll be easier to detect I'd expect... nobody should be crossing the boarder in the middle of nowhere right?

A wall is not the single solution to the problem... it could help... but we need a better immigration policy. We need to be allowing a lot more immigrants into this country to work here legally. We need to be taxing them. We need to help recover the cost of the services we've created. Also, a big open door would deter immigrants from entering legally... why risk it when it's likely that you can easily enter legally (if you're not a felon) and get legal work. This reduces the # of people entering illegally and highlights those who do (if you can enter legally easily... why are you not going through the proper channels?)

We're missing out here... we have a great group of people who want to come here and work. We can let them do that... and can tax them to recover the cost for the services they use here. We can grow our economy. A wall alone is not a solution.
