Australia has been plagued by a series of gang rapes by Arab men. One Muslim blamed the women who "sway suggestively,' wear make-up and don't cover themselves in the tradition of Islam."
The man went on to say "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?…The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."
The really disturbing thing about these comments is that they come, not from some radical wacko on the street, but from Sheik Taj el-Dene Elhilaly, the top Muslim cleric in Australia! (WorldNet Daily)
The cleric later apologized saying, "I had only intended to protect women's honor." Yeah right. He wants to protect women's honor by keeping women at home in their rooms. There was no word of outrage by “moderate” Muslims.

You wanted other Muslims to show outrage, and it appears that they have.
Sheik Taj el-Dene Elhilaly will not give sermons for 2-3 months. Also, as mentioned in the article, "Other Muslim leaders, Australia's sex discrimination commissioner and political leaders condemned the comments." (emphasis added)
One might argue that this is a slap on the wrist (as someone quoted in the story does) - and perhaps rightly, but how many times do people in this country also get away with stupid comments with a slap on the wrist (or less)? Either way, here's your "word of outrage by 'moderate' Muslims."
Thanks, John. I'm glad Muslim leaders in Australia decided not to publicly side with someone who says the gang rapes were the women's fault.
Maybe its just me, but the fact that his own mosque refused to censure him sounds like something less than outrage though.
Somehow even as I was writing that I knew it wouldn't be good enough for you.
Concerning what I said above about people in this country also getting away with stupid comments: In 1990 the Republican gubenatorial candidate in Texas, Clayton Williams, said the following: bad weather is like rape and "as long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." The Republicans still allowed him to finish the race.
What can I say, John. Sometimes Republicans are just as stupid as Democrats and Muslims. Mr. Williams comments are every bit as disgusting, clueless, and reprehensible as the Sheik's.
And you're right. Its not good enough for me. I would expect this man's mosque to censure him just as I would expect a church to discipline, if not dismiss, a Christian pastor who thought women deserved to be raped.
So what's your point?
My points are: A) you asked for a "word of outrage" by Muslims and I provided it; and B) a group that you unfailingly support (Republicans) had a member who made similarly stupid comments and was punished even less than this Sheik. That is all.
If I'm understanding this correctly, you both think these mens quotes are ridiculuous and they both should have been more severely dealt with by their organizations. Is that right? What are we arguing about again?
