Islam in public schools

Earlier this month Recliner Commentaries commented on a school in California which has been given the legal right to have children "role play" Islamic religious practices in public school. Then there was a public school in Oregon which had students dress as Muslims and learn Muslim prayers. Now there is a public school in Ohio showing preference for Islam.

No word of any protests by the ACLU, People for the American Way, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State or the National Education Association. Apparently the idea of separation of church and state just means that all Christian influence must be erased from public schools.

Men can now use women’s restrooms

“Transgender people won the right to use any restroom operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in railroad and subway stations in an agreement reached with a woman who had sued the agency for the right. Under the agreement, reached Monday, the MTA also agreed to pay Helena Stone, formerly known as Henry McGuinness, $2,000…in damages to pay for her legal fees…” (International Herald Tribune, see also WorldNetDaily).

I wonder how “woman-like” a man really needs to be to use the MTA woman’s room. Can any man who shaves, grabs a purse, puts on some lip gloss and claims to be transgendered now legally use the women’s MTA restrooms?

With all due compassion to those genuinely afflicted with Gender Identity Disorder (DSM IV), isn’t the practical effect of this decision to allow any man willing to dress up like a woman the legal freedom to invade the privacy of an MTA woman’s room?

Up until now, if a man entered a woman’s restroom, the women could presumably call 911 on their cell phones. The practical effect of this decision would appear to be that when the wives or daughters of New York need to use an MTA restroom, the one next to them may be a man and there’s not a singly thing anyone can do about it --except maybe to pray that those men are not really voyeurs or rapists.

If this bothers you, just wait until the Democrats regain power! Welcome to the brave new world of tolerance and radical gay rights.

Venezuela ties to e-voting machines?

"The federal government is investigating the takeover last year of a leading American manufacturer of electronic voting systems by a small software company that has been linked to the leftist Venezuelan government of President Hugo Chávez."

Islam and the war in Iraq

Yesterday Jihad Watch posted an article by Hugh Fitzgerald which criticized the Bush administration and the war in Iraq. While I often tend to react negatively to such criticism, I must admit that Mr. Fitzgerald made a lot of sense. While the article is rather long, it is definitely worth the time to read.

Where is the outrage now?

In Iraq, Boulous Iskander, a 59 year old Syrian Orthodox priest was kidnapped by jihadists. His family met the demands of a $40,000 ransom and a public renunciation of the Pope’s quotation about Islam. Rev. Iskander was released to the family several days later—with his severed head sitting on his chest next to his severed arms and legs (MNN).

American soldiers humiliate terrorists at Abu Ghraib and the entire world is outraged for months, but when jihadists commit atrocities like this, the world is virtually silent.

Terror attacks down by 80%

According to an article posted by LGF, the wall erected by Israel has reduced terrorist attacks on Israel by 80 percent.

Gang rape victims: “uncovered meat”

Australia has been plagued by a series of gang rapes by Arab men. One Muslim blamed the women who "sway suggestively,' wear make-up and don't cover themselves in the tradition of Islam."

The man went on to say "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?…The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."

The really disturbing thing about these comments is that they come, not from some radical wacko on the street, but from Sheik Taj el-Dene Elhilaly, the top Muslim cleric in Australia! (WorldNet Daily)

The cleric later apologized saying, "I had only intended to protect women's honor." Yeah right. He wants to protect women's honor by keeping women at home in their rooms. There was no word of outrage by “moderate” Muslims.

Nancy Pelosi just doesn’t get it

The following are excerpts from a CNS News article on Dennis Hastert and Nancy Pelosi.

( – "The United States cannot win the global war on terror if U.S. leaders don't understand it -- and Rep. Nancy Pelosi does not understand it, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said on Tuesday."

"Hastert -- who holds the job that Pelosi is eager to assume -- was reacting to Pelosi's remarks on the CBS program ‘60 Minutes."

"Pelosi told CBS's Leslie Stahl that yes, there are terrorists in Iraq. ‘But that doesn't mean we stay there. They'll stay there as long as we're there. They're there because we're there,"
‘ she said."

"Hastert said the minority leader is wrong. The global war on terror is just that -- global, he said." 'Is the Democrat Minority Leader really turning a blind eye towards the countless number of terrorists that we are fighting in the streets and battlefields of Iraq and also in numerous countries around the world? Does she forget the nearly 3,000 victims of September 11th? The 201 victims of the Madrid train bombings? And the 52 victims of the London bomb attacks? These were all innocent victims of the Global War on Terror. And what about the countless others who have been saved because of our efforts?"
(CNS News).

Mr. Hasert could have also mentioned that Israel's withdrawl from Lebanon in 2000 did not stop Hezbollah from continuing their attacks on Israel. And the fact that Israel pulled out of Gaza did not for a single day stop jihadists from continuing their attacks on Israel.

The kind of naiveté that thinks jihadists are just reasonable people with whom we can negotiate is one of the reasons Nancy Pelosi and many others on the Left are so dangerous. They just don’t get it!

Jihadists believe that Allah has commanded them to wage jihad and to bring the world into submission to Allah. They will not be satisfied when we pull out of Iraq. They would not be satisfied if we stopped supporting Israel. They would not be satisfied even if they were able to destroy Israel. Jihadists will either be stopped by force—or they will not be stopped at all.

Islam and child marriage

“The Qur’an takes child marriage for granted in its directives about divorce. Discussing the waiting period required in order to determine if the woman is pregnant, it says, ‘If you are in doubt concerning those of your wives who have ceased menstruating, know that their waiting period shall be three months. The same shall apply to those who have not yet menstruated’ (Qur’an 65:4)…In other words, Allah is here envisioning a scenario in which a prepubescent woman is not only married, but is being divorced by her husband.”

In the modern world, “Ayatollah Khomeini told the Muslim faithful that marrying a girl before she began menstruating was a ‘divine blessing.” (The Politically Correct Guide to Islam, by Robert Spencer, 68-69).

I would say that the Ayatollah Khomeini's views (d. 1989) were sick and perverted.

Rape in Iran

A disturbing article published in Iran Focus, October 21:

Tehran, Iran, Oct. 21 – "Girls as young as nine are running away from their homes and living on the streets in Iran, according to a classified report issued by the Ministry of Education. The report was made public by several Persian-language news websites run by former government officials. It notes that there is an exceptionally high number of run-away girls near Iran’s holy cities of Qom and Mashad. Iran has one of the highest record of runaway girls and women in the world. The state-run news agency ILNA reported in July that there were some 300,000 run-away women and girls in Iran and that 86 percent of girls who ran away from their homes for the first time were raped. The majority of such victims are rejected by their families if they choose to return after having been raped" (Iran Focus, Dhimmi Watch)

Civil war in Iraq

A few days ago, Jihad Watch posted a very provocative "solution" (?) to the war in Iraq. It is neither "stay the course" nor "cut and run." Check it out. What do you think?

Refusing services to gays

WorldNetDaily published an article on Saturday about the Christian owners of a landscaping company who refuse to work for gay clients.

While I appreciate the willingness of these Christians to take a stand—their stand is seriously misguided. I doubt that they also have a policy of not working for adulterers, idolaters or for single people who are just living together. Why single out just one group?

Not only is the landscapers’ policy seriously misguided it is contrary to the New Testament. There is nothing in the New Testament that would prohibit Christians from doing work for others whom we think are living in sin. These Christian landscapers should remember that St. Paul says “no one is righteous, no not one” (Romans 3:10).

But maybe the landscapers just refuse to work for those living in "serious" sin. Fair enough. Then they should also refuse to work for those filled with arrogant pride and self-righteousness which, according to the Bible, are also very serious sins.

The fact is that St. Paul tells us that we are to do good not just to other Christians, but to everyone (Galatians 6:10, 1 Thessalonians 5:15). Jesus tells us that we are to demonstrate love even to our enemies and to do good even to those who hate us (Luke 6:27)—not that this gay couple were “enemies.” They weren’t enemies until the Christian landscapers antagonized them!

So while I appreciate the zeal of these landscapers, I would describe them using the words of St. Paul who wrote (in an entirely different context) “they have a zeal for God but not according to knowledge” (Romans 10:2). The gay couple deserves an apology (and a free landscaping).

"Hezbollah sought war with Israel"

Aljazeera is reporting today that "Ahmed Abul Gheit, Egypt's foreign minister, said that Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, sought war with Israel to foil plans by the Lebanese government to disarm the group."

Where are they now?

Ambassador Dennis Ross pointed out on Fox's Weekend Live Saturday that the rocket fire from Gaza into Israel has not stopped for one day—not a single day—since Israel pulled out of Gaza!

This raises some serious questions: Where is all the international outrage against the Hamas government for their continued and unprovoked attacks against Israel? Why isn’t the United Nations Council on Human Rights condemning these attacks? Where is the media coverage of the violence against Israel? Why aren’t Cindy Sheehan and the anti-war crowd condemning these attacks? Why is it that when Israel is continually attacked the world remains silent, but when Israel responds, so many people and nations condemn Israel?

Multiculturalism in France

According to the TimesOnline:

"The figures are stark. An average of 112 cars a day have been torched across France so far this year and there have been 15 attacks a day on police and emergency services. Nearly 3,000 police officers have been injured in clashes this year. Officers have been badly injured in four ambushes in the Paris outskirts since September. Some police talk of open war with youths who are bent on more than vandalism."

"The thing that has changed over the past month is that they now want to kill us,” said Bruno Beschizza, the leader of Synergie, a union to which 40 per cent of officers belong. Action Police, a hardline union, said: “We are in a civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists."

Anti-Dhimmi introduces this article with the phrase, "The joy of Multiculturalism at work in France."

Jihad against Ethiopia

"Tensions are rising across the Horn of Africa - there is death and danger. Irredentist Somali Islamists have declared jihad against Ethiopia. Christians are being attacked and murdered by Muslims in Ethiopia. Eritrea, which is accused of arming the Somali Islamists, is exploiting anopportunity and has breached the 2000 cease-fire agreement by moving troopsinto the Eritrea-Ethiopia border buffer zone. Two Protestant Christians wererecently tortured to death in Eritrea. The savagery of persecution appearsto be escalating in proportion to regional tensions - and it could be aboutto get much worse" (World Evangelical Alliance - Religious Liberty News & Analysis" (e-mail, October 20, 2006).

Child trafficking in Benin

The following is a recent e-mail from Missions Insider:

"Poor, rural families in Benin and elsewhere in Africa often engage in vidomegon, a common social practice whereby a child, usually a daughter, is sent to live as a servant with a wealthier family. Originally, this practice also acted as a way for families to form relationships with one another."

"Today, however, the practice has fallen into the realm of child traffickers, who go from village to village to collect children and sell them to other nations. Benin has become a major supplier of illicit child labor. Many children have been forced into slavery and subjected to sexual abuse. Children from ages 3 to 15 are at the greatest risk of this practice."

"Most families who willingly relinquish their children feel they have no other recourse. Many live in desperate poverty and cannot afford to care for their children. The excessive number of children in each household is due to the practice of polygamy; and also, the women do not use any form of birth control."

"A Christian Aid-supported indigenous ministry in Benin has been working in communities to help abused and traumatized children. One of the girls, Estelle, whom native missionaries are working to free, was given to a woman who sells food. She is forced to work excessively long hours, and is only allowed two hours of sleep per night. Estelle would like to return home, but her father refuses to take her back. He sold her for a price of $50 per year."

"Dossou was sold as a slave at the age of six. He worked for four years before the ministry found him and placed him in their children’s center. Likewise, Paul, a 10-year-old orphan, was forced to work in a sandpit for three years. At night a lamp was attached to his feet, and he was forced to continue working. With little food, he became malnourished. Paul is currently living in the ministry’s children’s home, while a team is working to locate his parents."

"No American"

According to LGF, John Gibson of FOX News said recently, “Speaking as an American: no Sharia law, no veils. If you’re here, be American.”

I certainly agree with John Gibson about “no Sharia law” but I disagree about the veils. Being American means, among other things, freedom of religion. American Muslim’s right to wear veils is something guaranteed by our Constitution and should be vigorously protected, not condemned. The problem, Mr. Gibson, is not veils. It is the fact that many Muslims believe that Islam should be spread by violence if necessary. Muslim-American citizens who renounce the violent spread of Islam do not deserve to be considered un-American simply because they wear veils or observe other Muslim customs.

Muslim leaders convert to Christianity

The following is from an article published today in the Christian Newswire:

“WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC),, has just been informed that on July 20, 7 Muslim leaders (clerics) brutally attacked 50 or more Christians in Henno, Ethiopia. This latest attack is just one example of the increasing violence against Christians in Ethiopia. In fact, Islamic leaders are urging Muslims in the area to kill full-time Christian evangelists. The situation has reached such intensity that Christian leaders are in fear and moving in pairs to ward off attacks. Local Muslim authorities failed to take action against the Muslim attackers.”

The article went on to say, however, that “In the following weeks, many Muslims denounced the actions taken against the Christians. To express their disgust, Muslims refused to go to Mosques. In fact, forty-seven key leaders became Christians and renounced Islam stating, “If Islam means killing innocent brothers and sisters – we do not want to follow it!”

Wouldn't it be wonderful if a few million more Muslims would follow their couragous example?

Pastors urge love for Muslims

In Australia two pastors, Daniel Scot and Danny Nalliah, were convicted of "hate crimes" simply for teaching what the Qur'an and Hadith actually say. Their conviction is now under appeal and they refuse to apologize for what they've taught even though they may face lengthy prison sentences.

"For Scot, telling the truth about Islam and encouraging Christians to love Muslims is his main ministry, which he's going to keep on doing." Scot says, "We Christians have a responsibility to reach out to Muslim people. And that has to be done in love. And we have to speak the truth in love." For the rest of the article see MNN.

Pastors Scot and Nalliah were not calling for a holy war against Muslims. Far from encouraging Christians to harass or attack Muslims, they encourage Christians to love and reach out to Muslims. But they still face prison time. If this can happen in Australia--one of our closest cousins on this planet--it should be a serious wake-up call in America to resist the tyranny of political correctness and guard our freedom of speech well.

Angelina Jolie and the United Nations

The following is part of an excellent article Michelle Malkin wrote responding to Angelina Joilie regarding the United Nations:

"Increasing aid to a corrupt global bureaucracy may give comfort to Hollywoodliberals. (How, by the way, does Jolie think peace is "established?" With a magic wand? By wishing it so? By relying on feckless blue helmets who coddle jihadists and other thugs?) In the land of make-believe, Jolie's call to pour more tax dollars into the U.N. refugee agency's coffers might well help to stem the refugee tide. But in the real world, it will only perpetuate exploitation. The well-read actress ought to read up on the Kenyan bribery scandal that has plagued the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR."

"You want to talk about scandal? For years, U.N. staff members in Nairobi shook down African refugees seeking resettlement in North America, Europe and Australia while the U.N. looked the other way. The extortion racket charged up to $5,000 a head for resettlement rights. Belated investigations found that the scandal wasn't the result of a few rogue workers-but of negligent management that created a ripe atmosphere for abuse."

"You want to talk about callousness? Tell it to female and child refugees across the Congo who have been victimzed by sexual predators protected among the ranks of U.N. peacekeers and civilian staff. Last year, some 50 U.N. peacekeepers and U.N. civilian officers faced an estimated 150 allegations of sexual exploitation and rape in the Congo alone. The abuse is widespread among U.N. personnel-from the Central African Republic to Bosnia and Eastern Europe. Again, these refugees were exploited while U.N. management fiddled."

"You want to talk about failing to take notice? As Claudia Rosett has reported, the U.N. refugee agency sits on its hands while some 300,000 North Korean refugees have endured decades of abuse and hopelessness underground in China-where the $4.4 million-funded UNHCR office is fortified against refugee intrusions."

"You want to talk about wasted resources? That $10 billion Saddam Hussein siphoned off in the U.N. Oil-for-Food debacle could have fed a lot of hungry people..."

FBI wants ISP's to track users?

According to CNet News, "FBI Director Robert Mueller on Tuesday called on Internet service providers to record their customers' online activities."

The putrid cesspool that is the United Nations

By some estimates a half-million people have been kidnapped, tortured and/or slaughtered in the Sudan. Hundreds or thousands more are being tortured and imprisoned in countries like Eritrea or Pakistan. North Koreans are starving by the millions. A billion people in China and millions more in numerous Muslim countries lack basic freedoms of speech and religion--the list could go on and on. So the United Nations Council on Human Rights in all its wisdom has chosen to act by focusing its attention solely on....Israel! (LGF, Washington Post)

When will we realize that this dream of all nations coming together in unity and harmony is just a pipe dream, a pie-in-the-sky fantasy. Why on earth do we continue to pour millions of dollars into this putrid cesspool that is the United Nations? Can’t we think of anything better to do with millions of tax dollars?

Violent Muslims are the minority

The good news is that Muslims who support violent Jihad are a small minority. The bad news is that there are about 19 million Muslims in this “small minority”…and that’s just in Indonesia! See Michelle Malkin’s excellent post.

Teenage girl beaten

Imagine most people's reaction if a Muslim student was punished by school officials in the West for bringing a Qur'an to school? Imagine the worldwide Muslim reaction if that Qur'an was thrown into a trash can? The following story was published yesterday by the Assisst News Service:

KASUR, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- "A 15-year-old Christian female student had to confront wrath and thrashing by her Arabic teacher when the cross-wearing teen refused to shed her cross on Friday, October 13 in the district of Kasur, some 50 Km from eastern city of Lahore. “The cross is our Christian religious symbol so I cannot remove it,” the BosNewsLife news service quoted Kiran Shahzadi as telling her Muslim teacher, Naisra Latif."

"According to the report the girl was taken to the principal of the government secondary school who pulled the cross from her neck and consigned it to a dustbin."

"The report went on to claim that the principal made Kiran stand under sun that made her faint."

"Kiran was taken to a hospital where the doctor who examined her pronounced that she had been beaten, it added."

No compulsion in Islam?

The following are excerpts from an e-mail I just received from the World Evangelical Alliance:

"On the evening of Monday 9 October, Kaihana Hussain, the teenage daughter of Muslim immigrants, told her parents that she was converting from Islam to Christianity. Her father responded with unrestrained fury. Neighbours heard "blood curdling" and "terrifying" screams and cries of "Help me, help me, they're trying to kill me", but they were unsure which apartment the screams were coming from, and the voices were unfamiliar."

"After a short time, Kaihana came running out of the family's apartment, dressed only in her underwear, her clothes torn off, blood splattered over her severely scratched and cut body."

"All that is known at this stage is that after her father began to attack her, Kaihana's mother, Yasmin (41, and a strict and devout Muslim), intervened to aid and protect her daughter."

"What police found when they entered the apartment was Yasmin bleeding severely from a fatal knife wound to the chest, and her husband, Kaihana's father, Dr Muhammad Hussain (49) also bleeding from a potentially fatal knife wound to the chest. Blood was splattered on walls, floors and doorways throughout the three-bedroom luxury apartment. Yasmin died at the scene and Dr Hussain is presently hospitalised in an induced coma, in a critical condition. Police have confirmed that Kaihana is not a suspect in their deaths"
(World Evangelical Alliance - Religious Liberty News & Analysis.)

I suspect that when many Americans think of “Radical Muslims” they think of those who engage in terrorism. Unfortunately, the story above is not an isolated event. Millions of Muslims around the world would face the same fate if they announced that they were leaving Islam. Islam, as a religion, is fundamentally at odds with the ideas of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Islam in another public school

A few days ago Recliner Commentaries commented on a public school in California which has been given the legal right to require students to "role play" Islamic practices in school.

Now another school (this one in Oregon) has now come to light which is getting away with indoctrinating children in Islam (Dhimmi Watch).

Apparently, the idea of separation of church and state only applies to keeping Christianity out of the public square. Where is the ACLU, People for the American Way, or Americans United for the Separation of Church and State now?

John Kerry on killing the president

Left wing author and pundit Susan Estrich was on Fox and Friends this morning talking about Ann Coulter and how right wing rhetoric is so far over the top. Neither she nor her hosts bothered to mention John Kerry’s joke about killing the president (Texas Rainmaker)

North Korea threatens nuclear attack

According to WorldNetDaily:

“Communist North Korea has threatened to fire a nuclear-tipped missile unless the U.S. takes action to resolve its standoff with Pyongyang, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap. “

“The unnamed North Korean official who issued the threat said the intent is to bring Washington to the negotiating table. “

“We hope the situation will be resolved before an unfortunate incident of us firing a nuclear missile comes," the official said yesterday. "That depends on how the U.S. will act.”

Stratfor says that there is no satisfactory military solution to this problem. So what would happen if we told China they have about six weeks to solve this problem before we start selling medium range nuclear missiles to South Korea, Japan and Taiwan?

John Kerry on killing the president

Absolutely unbelievable! Presidential candidate John Kerry joking with Bill Maher about killing President Bush! (Texas Rainmaker link to YouTube). What is it the left says about conservative rhetoric going over the top?

I understand that it is illegal to threaten to kill the president even if you don't mean it also illegal to joke about it? Legal or not, this is really not funny...not at all! Seriously, this should not be tolerated from a top political leader. Kerry needs to issue an immediate apology and the DNC needs to drop--like a ton of bricks--any support for this man.

Religious fundamentalism

The essence of religious fundamentalism is the desire to interpret one’s sacred books as they were originally intended to be understood. Religious revisionists (theological liberals, moderates, progressives) seek to re-interpret their Scriptures more in line with the conventional wisdom of the modern world We could draw a line placing religious fundamentalists on one end and religious revisionists on the other end (with varying degrees on both sides).

Christian fundamentalists try to interpret the Bible in light of its historical and literary context. For example, as repugnant as some Old Testament commands are to modern sensibilities (e.g. the commands to kill or drive out the Canaanites from the Promised Land) Christian fundamentalists point out that many of these commands were directed to specific people (Hebrews) at a specific time, under specific circumstances and were never intended as universal commands “to kill the infidels.” Christian fundamentalists, therefore, do not use violence in an attempt to coerce people into submission to Christianity.

Based on the commands of the New Testament, fundamentalist Christians believe they have a mandate to “go into all the world and preach the Gospel,” that is, to tell people that all have sinned against God and stand condemned before Him, but that God became human in the person of Jesus Christ to die an atoning sacrifice for the sin of all who turn to Him in repentance and faith.

“Christian” revisionists, on the other hand are pretty much embarrassed by all this ancient theology. They are generally embarrassed, for example, by the idea that Jesus was an atoning sacrifice since the idea of atoning sacrifice is not a very politically correct concept in the modern world.

Further, they point out that modern people can’t really believe in miracles and resurrections any more (all evidence to the contrary). And in sharp contrast to the writers of the New Testament, “Christian” revisionists don’t talk about sin or repentance much either. After all, no one wants to be told that they are living in sinful rebellion against a God who doesn’t take it very well and will one day be their judge. Most people would rather think of sin as a “mistake” or a “poor judgment.”

[Or we can always blame it on our parents, our environment, our society, our genes, or our government—or, we can simply deny that our behavior is sinful at all. Throwing out such inconvenient teachings as the Sermon on the Mount or Ten Commandments (and removing them from public places so we don’t have to be reminded) revisionists simply re-define sin relative to the conventional wisdom of the day. So, for example, serial sexual relationships are no longer considered sin—sin, rather is re-defined, as the fact that government doesn’t pay for everyone’s health care, fix everyone’s houses after a hurricane, or crack down harder on polluters of the environment. Anything to avoid personally responsibility for the fact that we have individually, willfully and sinfully rebelled against our Creator]

So while Christian fundamentalism takes the New Testament seriously when it teaches that Jesus is the Son of God who died an atoning death and was physically resurrected, it doesn’t really matter to “Christian” revisionists what the New Testament actually says or what the authors intended to communicate. Since such ideas are not accepted in the modern world “Christian” revisionists either flatly deny that this ancient theology is true (which makes one wonder why they continue to consider themselves “Christian”), or they explain the texts away as some kind of symbolic narratives (e.g. Marcus Borg).

Muslim revisionists (i.e. moderates) largely do the same thing with their own sacred books. While both moderates and fundamentalists in Islam take seriously Muhammad’s claims to be the latest and greatest prophet, many Muslim moderates are not entirely comfortable with all the violence in the Qur’an, the Hadith, and Sura. Unlike the commands to violence in the Old Testament which were for a particular time and place, commands to the violence in Islamic texts are often universal, i.e. kill the infidels wherever you find them. Muslim moderates, therefore, tend to focus on, and emphasize, the parts of the Qur’an about compassion, and peace. They tend to ignore, downplay, or spiritualize (as only an inward struggle) Muhammad’s life and call to violent jihad (I’m glad they do. Far from being a “Muslim hater,” I’ve said before that I probably have more in common with Muslims who support American freedoms and renounce violence than I do with secular American hedonists).

On the other hand, Muslim fundamentalists, like Christian fundamentalists, attempt to interpret Islamic texts in light of their historical, literary context. Muslim fundamentalists would point out that after Muhammad left Mecca for Medina, he was no longer persecuted, but became a powerful warrior who fought battles, ordered executions and killed “the infidel” in his efforts to bring the world into submission to Allah. Muslim fundamentalists argue that Muhammad’s commands to violent jihad and to kill the infidel abrogate his earlier, more peaceful sayings.

Muslim fundamentalists interpret the words of Muhammad in historical, literary context and conclude that in order to be faithful to Muhammad their mission is to bring the world into submission to Allah, peacefully if possible, but violently if necessary.

Christian fundamentalist interpret the New Testament in historical, literary context and conclude that in order to be faithful to Jesus Christ their mission is to go into all the world and preach the gospel of repentance toward God and faith toward Jesus Christ, showing love and compassion even to their enemies.

[Footnote: As with any summary, all of this, of course, is overly simplistic. In reality there is much more involved. For example, when I identify with Christian Fundamentalism, I probably identify most closely with the scholarly, fundamentalist side of the Fundamentalist / Modernist controversy of the 1920’s which eventually produced the four volume set, “The Fundamentals.” Although all Christian fundamentalists continue to believe in the five “fundamentals” (Inspiration of Scripture, Deity of Christ, His virgin birth, His substitutionary atonement, and second coming), they eventually splintered into more and more separatist groups with more and more defined theology—often with vitriolic attacks against any group that doesn’t dot their “i” or cross their “t” in the same way. So although I identify myself with the fundamentalist side of the Fundamentalist / Modernist controversy, I am frankly embarrassed—not by the theology, but by the practice—of much of Christian fundamentalism today. Nevertheless, to equate Christian fundamentalism with Islamic fundamentalism as many do today, is shear ignorance—and that was the point of this entire lengthy post]

Amazing love

As everyone knows by now, last week a gunman took over an Amish school and killed five girls, ages 7 to 13. Before being shot, thirteen year old Marian Fisher and her eleven year old sister, Barbie, asked if the killer would take their lives instead of the others. In an almost superhuman expression of Christian love, the Amish visited the wife of the murderer and offered their forgiveness for the killer and compassion for his family. About half of those who showed up to offer comfort at the killer’s funeral were Amish. They have also asked that funds be set up to help the killer’s family just as funds have been set up to help the families of the victims.

These are Christians who take the Bible quite literally when it records Jesus as saying, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:43-48).

According to the Gospels, Jesus then practiced what he preached when on the cross he prayed, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Hundreds of Iraqi's poisoned

Aljazeera is reporting that up to 600 or 700 Iraqi policemen and soldiers were poisoned after breaking their daily Ramadan fast. “Some of the policemen began bleeding from the ears and nose after the meal” and there are reports that some have died. Investigations are now in progress (Aljazeera, Guardian).

Atrocity in Pakistan

According to an article published yesterday, a Christian missionary couple and their four children were kidnapped last month while working underground in Pakistan.

Since Islam is such a “peaceful religion,” the kidnappers asked them to convert to Islam before harming them. When they refused, the kidnappers murdered one of the teenage boys and then forced the parents to watch as they raped their daughter and cut one of her breasts. She died too. Another Christian family was then kidnapped and several homes and a church were burned. The Muslim police are siding with the Muslims (ASSIST News Service).

If such an atrocity happened in America—even if it was done to the family of an illegal alien gang member—the entire country would be outraged, whether Christian or Jew, agnostic or atheist, Republican or Democrat. It would be on every news channel, in every newspaper and would even be condemned in the halls of Congress.

But in Pakistan it is doubtful that there will be any noticeable response at all. So, when we talk about “peaceful Muslims” vs. radical Muslims, on which side are the ordinary Pakistanis who not only remain silent, but may even silently support such atrocities committed in the name of Islam?

The Truth about Muhammad

The Truth about Muhammad by Robert Spencer is a biography of the Muslim prophet based entirely on recognized Muslim sources: 1) The sira or ancient Muslim biographies of Muhammad like the earliest one from Ibn Ishaq, 2) the teachings of Muhammad and the sayings about him by his earliest followers as recorded in the Hadith, and 3) the teachings of Muhammad himself recorded in the Qur’an.

Mr. Spencer shows how the teachings of the Qur’an fit in with, and are better understood in the light of, these other sources. After reviewing and explaining the primary historical documents, the author provides a biography of Muhammad from birth to death. While some modern biographies (e.g. Muhammad; a biography of the Prophet by Karen Armstrong) provide a whitewashed, politically correct image of “The Prophet,” Robert Spencer provides a biography as presented in the original sources—warts and all.

This, of course, is not going to be popular with many. Mr. Spencer, received his first thoughtful and probing book review on his blog, Jihad Watch. It reads:

“YOu are the most f**king person I have ever seen. Enrooted in islamic hatred, you think your personal statements on Prophet Muhammed will be deemed appropriate. Motherf**ker, I am coming to kill you. I will hack the head off your face and i will kill your family.”

Brilliant, isn't it? The interesting thing about this death threat is that Mr. Spencer's book is just reporting what respected ancient Muslims wrote about their own prophet!.

The Truth About Muhammad is outstanding and should be read by everyone in the western world—unless, of course, you’re mind is already closed.

Muslim civil war in France?

Michel Thoomis of the Action Police Trade Union in France said yesterday:

"We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists. This is not a question of urban violence any more, it is an intifada, with stones and Molotov cocktails. You no longer see two or three youths confronting police, you see whole tower blocks emptying into the streets to set their 'comrades' free when they are arrested." (LGF,

Repeat after me..."Islam is a peaceful religion, Islam is a peaceful religion...."

Muslim prayer in public schools OK

If a public school teacher were to encourage Christian fasting and to require memorization of the Bible and the recitation Christian prayers in class, even as part of a history lesson on Christianity, she would immediately be accused of violating church/state separation and the ACLU would undoubtedly sue. Now we discover that the Constitution apparently only prohibits Christian activities.

According to Dhimmi Watch, a public school teacher in California:

“told students they would adopt roles as Muslims for three weeks to help them learn what Muslims believe. She encouraged them to use Muslim names, recited prayers in class, had them memorize and recite a passage from the Quran and made them give up something for a day, such as television or candy, to simulate fasting during the month of Ramadan.”

This was challenged in court by Christian parents only to be told by the Ninth U.S. Court of Appeals that the assignment was Constitutional and legal because the students were only roll playing and not actually practicing Islam!

But it gets worse. On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case allowing the lower court ruling to stand! (Dhimmi Watch, Supreme Court, San Francisco Chronicle)

Can you imagine the outcry if a Roman Catholic history teacher in a public school issued “roll playing” assignments in which students read and memorized from the Bible, recited prayers and served Eucharist! Do you think for a minute that ANY court would uphold such an assignment on the grounds that the students were just roll playing and not actually practicing Christianity!

One of my colleagues suggested that Christian public school history teachers all over America should began designing “roll playing” activities for the purpose of helping students understand Christianity and its roll in Western Civilization! I disagree. While I'm all for teaching students the history of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, etc., requiring students to "roll play" the religous rituals or practices of any other religion is not only a violation of church and state, it is a violation of religious freedom and conscience!

This is the only case I can think of in which Christians, Jews, Muslims, the ACLU, People for the American Way, AmericansUnited for Separation of Church and State, and even American Athiests should all be united in their outrage over this decision.

Why is the world afraid of Muslims?

Hey, you can't do that here!

A seventh grader at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School has been threatened with disciplinary action if she continues her behavior which was deemed unacceptable by the school's vice principal. What did she do? In today's culture we might wonder if she had sex in the hallway or threatened a classmate with a gun.

Actually, what she did was have the audacity to read her Bible in the cafeteria during lunchtime! (Rutherford Institute, CNSNews)

Breaking: Amish murderer child molester

In a news conference still in progress, Pennsylvania police report that when the murderer of the Amish children called his wife from the school he admitted to molesting underage family members 20 years ago.

His suicide note said he had been having dreams of molesting again and that he was angry at God for taking their premature baby several years ago.

In other breaking news, CBS just reported that a Turkish airliner with 107 people on board has been hijacked and is now on the ground in Italy.

Breaking: North Korea announces nuclear test

North Korea announced today its intention to conduct a nuclear test. This is apparently the first time they have made an official public announcment of this intention (Reuters, Aljazeerh).

Their reasoning is to protect themselves against the evil, nuclear warmongering United States (Memo to North Korea: If the United States truly wanted nuclear war, North Korea would probably be a giant radioactive crater by now).

Angry at life, angry at God

Yesterday Charles Carl Roberts, a 32 year old milk truck driver, dropped his kids off at school. He then drove to a differnt school, an Amish school in Pennsylvania where he let 15 boys and four women go, barricaded the doors, said goodbye to his wife via cell phone, lined up the 10 remaining girls and a teachers-aide, tied them, and shot them execution style (a fifth girl died this morning). He then shot himself.

Apparently he had told his wife he was acting in revenge out of some grudge he had held for 20 years. He left a suicide note saying that he was angry at life and angry at God. (CNN, SkyNews)

The Amish are among the most peaceful, non-violent people in the world. Our hearts and prayers go out to them this morning.

Taliban strikes again

LASHKAR GAH, 2 Oct 2006 (IRIN) - "Schools in southern Afghanistan are closing in large numbers due to pressure and intimidation from the resurgent Taliban movement, leading to an education crisis in the volatile region, officials say. Almost 150 educational institutes have closed in Kandahar province alone, according to the education ministry. Regionally more than 50 schools have been attacked this year.“Some 145 schools are currently closed in Kandahar and more than 70,000 students, including boys and girls, are deprived of education,” said Mahbobullah Khan, an official from Kandahar’s education department. Marzia, who was studying at the girl’s high school in Laskhkar Gah, provincial capital of Helmand province, gave up her studies in mid-September after her father made her leave school due to fear of attack."

It occurs to me that the percentage of "peaceful" Muslims in Afghanistan is really quite irrelevant. All it takes is a relatively small percentage of jihadist thugs to bully the country into submission.

Breaking: Another school shooting

CBS is reporting at least six dead in a shooting today in an Amish school in Pennsylvania.

Chris Wallace and Bill Clinton

As everyone knows, last week Chris Wallace had a rather explosive interview with former President Bill Clinton. Yesterday Mr. Wallace followed up on that interview with an interview of experts analyzing Mr. Clinton's assertions.

At one point former CIA Unit Chief, Michael Scheuer bluntly called Bill Clinton, Richard Clarke and Sandy Berger liars:

WALLACE: "But, Mr. Scheuer, I can see you beginning to shake your head. I mean, whether or not they had certifiable proof about the Cole, they certainly knew that Al Qaeda had been involved in the 1998 bombing of the U.S. embassies in Africa."

"In your opinion, as somebody who was up close and personal, why didn't the Clinton administration go after Al Qaeda after the USS Cole?"

SCHEUER: "Mr. Wallace, my opinion is not all that important. I went to a little Jesuit school in Buffalo called Canicius, and the priests taught us never to lie, but if you had to lie, never lie about facts. Mr. Richard Clarke, Mr. Sandy Berger, President Clinton are lying about the opportunities they had to kill Usama bin Laden. That's the plain truth, the exact truth."

"Men and women at the CIA risked their lives to provide occasions to kill a man we knew had declared war and had attacked America four or five times before 1998. We had plans that had been approved by the Joint Operations Command at Fort Bragg. We had opportunities, many opportunities to kill him."

"But that's the president's decision. That's absolutely the case. It's not a simple, dumb bureaucrat like me; that's not my decision. It's his. But for him to get on the television and say to the American people he did all he could is a flat lie, sir."

If Mr. Clinton had said, "you're right, we had opportunities to kill bil Laden but before 9/11 it was much harder to justify ordering someone's execution without trial," I'd still disagree with him, but I would actually come to Bill Clinton's defense (as I did recently in another post). Hindsight is certainly much better than foresight.

But if Mr. Scheuer's claims are true, I have little sympathy for Mr. Clinton's apparent use of bald-faced lies to whitewash the failures of his administration while smearing the current administration.
