What I think of Muslims

One of my readers brought to my attention that I really need to clarify my position on Islam (the religion) and Muslims (the people). It’s probably pretty clear that I think radical Islam is the most dangerous phenomena since the times of Adolf Hitler so I won’t spend time on that today, but my position on Muslims as individuals is apparently being misunderstood.

Contrary to what some readers may believe, I do not think that all Muslims are terrorists. My position on this hasn’t changed a bit since last year (June 15, 2005) when I recommended the book, Waging Peace on Islam by Christine Mallouhi. Ms. Mallouhi was a Christian missionary to the Middle East for many years and writes that she found Muslim people to be the among the most compassionate and hospitable people she has ever known. Some Muslims even risked their own lives to protect her and her husband from their own Muslim governments.

And contrary to the impression some readers may have, I certainly don’t hate Muslims. Actually, my position on this hasn’t changed since last year either (August, 2005) when I wrote, “…while I am against Islam as a religion, I love Muslims as individuals. I have never treated a Muslim with anything but kindness and respect. If I had Muslim neighbors, I would go out of my way to respect their views, to be kind and compassionate, and to assist them in personal needs.” I often go out of my way to be friendly to Muslims. I dare say that I would risk my own neck to defend a Muslim whom I thought was being attacked.

After the terrorist attacks in London I was concerned that some might take their frustration out on individual Muslims so I wrote, “With this in mind, as you come to the front of the Walmart checkout line and find that the cashier waiting on you happens to be a Muslim, please remember one thing: she didn’t do it! The terrorists did not ask her opinion or advice about the bombings and if she is an American Muslim the chances are good that she is just a disgusted over the attacks as you are. Unfortunately, there are some Americans who will undoubtedly vent their anger and frustration out on innocent Muslims so please, in the coming days when you happen to meet a Muslim in the store or on the street, go out of your way to be a little more friendly and show a little extra kindness. Even if they personally agreed with the attacks (which is unlikely), the words of St. Paul would still apply, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

So while I will continue to rant and rave about the evils of Islam (the religion) in general, and against Islamic extremism in particular, on a personal level, I never intend to advocate anything but love and compassion for Muslims as individuals.

Debbie vs. Jill

One of my favorite blogs is Debbie Schlussel.Com. Yesterday Debbie was responding to an eleven part newspaper series written by Jill Caroll. Ms. Carroll wrote:

"I think we can no more say that Muslims are monsters because some people are murderers than you could say that all Americans are like Al Capone because Al Capone killed people."

Debbie responded saying,

"Uh, Jill, how many Americans danced in the street when Al Capone murdered someone? Which American religion (besides Islam) includes the precept to kill the Infidels? Al Capone's (Catholicism) certainly didn't. How many Americans, how many Catholics cheered Al Capone's activities on? 1.6 billion? Millions? Hardly. How many have posters of Al Capone up at their homes? How many watch Cosa Nostra recruitment videos? How many textbooks and church sermons urge mass murder of others based on religion?"

Of course not all Muslims are monsters, but I agree with Debbie—Jill Caroll’s illustration is faulty.

Jill Carroll wrote:

"Painting any group of people with a broad brush . . . is never accurate and is never helpful. I have had many friends who were Muslims who are angry, embarrassed, frightened and disgusted by the things they see other people doing in the name of their religion."

Debbie responded,

"Really, Jill? Then, where are they? Why are there none denouncing Hezbollah, HAMAS, Islamic Jihad? Where are they in your writing, Jill? Because we certainly know they exist in your imagination and PR machine."

Jill is right that we need to be careful about painting any group with a broad brush, but Debbie certainly has a valid point. The relative silence by all those supposedly moderate Muslims is very disturbing.

Iran submarine launch

Iran recently "test fired a long-range, radar-evading missile” from one of its three submarines (Reuters/CNN). Imagine the clout they will have if they ever manage to park one of their submarines with a nuclear missile off one of our coasts in range of New York, Miami, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, or Seattle.

Back in the cold war days America and the Soviet Union had a policy known as MAD—Mutual Assured Destruction. This meant that hopefully neither side would launch a nuclear strike, knowing that the other side would always have time to wipe the aggressor off the face of the map. That strategy worked with the Soviet Union—though just barely. MAD will not work with Iran, however. Not only does Iran have good reason to doubt that the U.S. would respond with nuclear weapons even if we were nuked ourselves, but Iran’s leadership would gladly die and sacrifice their country in the name of Allah.

SB 1441 and discrimination

Yesterday Arnold Schwarzeneggger signed SB 1441 into law. SB 1441 amends section 11135 of the law relating to discrimination by adding sexual orientation to the list. SB 1441 reads in part:

"No person in the State of California shall, on the basis of race, national origin, ethnic group identification, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, color, or disability, be unlawfully denied full and equal access to the benefits of, or be unlawfully subjected to discrimination under, any program or activity that is conducted, operated, or administered by the state or by any state agency, is funded directly by the state, or receives any financial assistance from the state. Notwithstanding Section 11000,this section applies to the California State University."

In practice this probably means that Christian students in California will no longer be able to use California financial aid (to which their parents contributed in taxes) to attend Christian colleges that have behavior codes against homosexuality. The very law that seeks to eliminate discrimination actually enshrines discrimination against many Christians.

Openly homosexual students have hundreds of college options open to them. This law penalizes the few Christian Colleges that have moral convictions against homosexual behavior. Tolerance, gay activist style, says, you either agree with us or we cut off your funding.

Hezbollah's propaganda exposed

Hezbollah's propaganda exposed.

The Pope and intelligent design

UPI is reporting that the "Pope may embrace intelligent design." I would certainy hope so. While some Christians may object to intelligent design as a methodology, denying intelligent design as a theory is denying that God had anything to do with the origin of the universe.

The U.N. and Hezbollah

An article just published in The Weekly Standard alleges that UNIFIL (United Nations Forces in Lebanon) regularly published current information about Israeli troop movements on its website during the recent war. It was no secret that UNIFIL passively allowed the military buildup of Hezbollah in southern lebanon in violation of U.N. resolutions, but if The Weekly Standard allegation is true, the U.N. was actively assisting Hezbollah terrorists in the war!

When will we realize that the U.N. is actually part of the problem? Yesterday I e-mailed my senator asking for an investigation. Please consider doing the same

Centanni / Wiig forced to convert

This morning Fox News correspondent Steve Centanni and cameraman Olaf Wiig were released from captivity after announcing their conversion to Islam. Steve Centanni told Fox News, “We were forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint.” This, in spite of that fact that Muhammad taught “there is no compulsion in religion.” The journalist’s Muslim captors dishonor their own prophet.

To become a Muslim one must say, and sincerely believe, the following statement: “I declare there is no god but Allah and I declare that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” (Guide). By contrast, genuine Christianity is more of a “heart thing” so there is no specific phrase one recites in order to become a Christian. Becoming Christian involves a deep acknowledgement that one has rebelled against God in thoughts, words and actions, and stands under God’s judgment. It involves coming to believe that Jesus Christ is the very “Word of God” who became human and died as a sacrifice to pay the penalty for our rebellion. It involves turning to Jesus Christ in repentance (genuine sorrow for one’s sins) and in faith (i.e. in sincere loving devotion). Conversion to Christianity is not about anything we do, but about—as John Calvin puts it—the disposition of one’s heart. Out of that heart-change, however, life-change inevitably comes.

Whether Christianity or Islam, Muhammad was right when he said that there should be “no compulsion in religion.”

Comair Flight 5191

This morning, Comair flight 5191 crashed on takeoff from Lexington, Kentucky killing forty-nine of the fifty people on board. Our hearts and prayers go out for the lone survivor and the families of the victims.

CBS news just reported that U.S. officials have told them anonymously that the plane took off on the wrong runway—a runway too short for this aircraft. I’ve been watching CNN, FOX and MSNBC all morning before and after church and find it interesting that of all the possible scenarios discussed, the one scenario that wasn’t even mentioned was terrorism. Terrorism probably had nothing to do with it, but like the proverbial elephant in the middle of the room that everyone ignores, the fact that the terrorist possibility was ignored was striking.

Needed: A change in foreign policy

In a recent Washington Times Op/Ed article, Diana West proposes a significant change in American foreign and domestic policy. My summary of her article appears below:

Diana West points out that while the U.S. has supported democracy in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Palestinian Authority, each of these governments have produced constitutions that enshrine Islamic or Shari’a Law as the law of the land. This law produces a stratified society that gives Muslims, and Muslim men in particular, the highest place and relegates those of other religions to the status of dhimmitude, an official state of inferiority. Shari’a Law does not promote freedom of speech or religion since it outlaws words or actions that are viewed as un-Islamic. In other words, these new democracies have “peacefully voted themselves into the same doctrinal camp as the many terror groups that violently strike at the non-Muslim world in the name of jihad….” So be it. It is not in our national interest to reform their culture or society. "It is, however, in our national interest…to ensure that Islamic law does not come to our own shores, whether by means of violent jihad terrorism…or through peaceful patterns of migration, such as those that have already Islamized large parts of Europe.” We need a policy shift away from pushing democracies and toward preventing Shari’a from reaching the West.

So much for the summary. I think the U.S. still needs to promote basic human rights in all countries but otherwise, I think Ms. West has an excellent point. I hope Washington politicians and presidential hopefuls are listening to her.

How to kill a westerner

MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute) specializes in translating Arabic documents into English. They just released the English translation of a Muslim website explaining “How to Kill a Westerner in the Arabian Peninsula.”

According to this document you (if you are a good Muslim terrorist) need first to “pray [to Allah] to guide you on the good path.” Then try to look like someone who is not religious—remove all religious articles from your car, like your jihad tapes, and don’t take your cell phone with you lest you be caught and the identities of your friends be compromised. Be sure to carry a weapon like a pistol, submachine gun or a good knife. Then drive past where the infidel dogs live and notice were they drive and what roads they take. Then, a few days later…

What follows are detailed plans and various scenarios. The document concludes noting that when the operation succeeds you will realize that you don’t need a whole squad to do this, just 1-3 people.

These instructions are for those living in Saudi Arabia. It could never happen in America…… right?

Back of the bus

Last week, a white bus driver for the Red River Elementary School in Louisiana directed black children to sit in the back of the bus while reserving the front seats for white kids. According to the Shreveport Times, the relatives of the black children were outraged.

The relatives? I would hope that everyone is outraged. The case is being investigated but if the charges are true, I hope this bus driver immediately enters the ranks of the unemployed.

One less planet

All our lives we were taught that there were nine planets. Now there are only eight. No, terrorists didn't blow one up. Reuters reports that astronomers have voted against Pluto.

The suspicion that 9/11 conspiracy theorists think Pluto has really just seceded from the planetary alliance cannot be confirmed.

ACLU vs. NSA; a conflict of interest

Readers may recall that recently the ACLU brought suit against the National Security Agency for illegal wiretapping. Even some who were sympathetic to the outcome were critical of the judge’s reasoning in the decision. Judicial Watch, a “watchdog” organization in Washington DC has now charged that Judge Anna Diggs Taylor who presided over the case served as the secretary and trustee for a group that recently gave a grant of $45,000 to the ACLU. Some are suspecting that the NSA did not get a fair shake in this decision. This issue will surely come up in appeal (USA Today).

Death threats and moderate Muslims

I read DebbieSchlussel.Com regularly. Today, Debbie asks, "You've heard about the "moderate" Muslims in Dearbornistan, the ones who wave flags for Hezbollah. If they're so moderate, why am I getting death threats from them on a daily basis?"

The e-mail's she posted are disturbing, to say the least. I certainly hope these charges are being investigated. If her post is true (and I have no reason to think its not), I'm not sure which bothers me more--the threats by radical muslims or the deafening silence by so many, so-called moderate Muslims.

F16's excort Northwest Airlines plane

FoxNews is reporting that a Northwest Airlines plane requested and received a Dutch military escort back to the Netherlands after suspicious activity involving passengers and cell phones. Twelve passenges have been arrested. The story is still developing.

Understanding Iran

The following is an excerpt from an e-mail sent out by the World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission, authored by researcher, Elizabeth Kendal. It helps understand what is going on with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran.

"Ahmadinejad is driven by ideology. He believes his divine calling is to hasten the coming of the Mahdi (the Shia messiah, the Hidden 12th Imam) and prepare Iran to receive him. According to the myth, the Mahdi, who supposedly disappeared in the 9th Century, will return from his occultation (concealment) in the well behind the Jamkaran mosque on the outskirts of Qom during a time of world chaos. He will lead the apocalyptic battle between good and evil and establish the global rule of Islam."

"Convinced the Mahdi's return is imminent, Ahmadinejad is preparing Iran to receive him. Various infrastructure projects are underway for the Mahdi's benefit, and Ahmadinejad has vowed to rid Iran of Christianity and all other offensive non-Islamic influences and practices. He is also agitating world chaos by inciting anti-Semitism, advocating genocide, bolstering his arsenal, courting dictators and stoking tension across the globe." (Assist News Service)

The would-be cannibal

The more I read news reports like this, the more I think we should repeal the "cruel and unusual punishment" prohibition in the Constitution and allow for execution by stoning.

Terrorist bomb plot in Germany

In a story that doesn’t seem to have received much publicity, a terrorist attempt to blow up a train in Germany failed yesterday when the bomb didn’t explode. The main suspect, Youssef Mohamad el Hajdib is now under arrest and another suspect is being pursued. According to the Associated Press, “The planned attack here stunned Germans who thought the country's vehement opposition to the Iraq war would insulate it from becoming a terror target…”

Many Germans apparently just don't get it. At its heart, Islamic terrorism is not really about the war in Iraq. It is not really even about the presence of American troops in the Middle East. The real issue is the goal of some Islamic leaders to bring the world under submission to Allah and Shari’a law by any and all means necessary. Negotiation and appeasement are futile.

The age of stupidity

There is an excellent post on the Heretical Librarian blog about the fact that even some in acedemia are now trying to deny that 9/11 was a terrorist atrocity. I'm becoming more and more convinced every day that we are moving from the age of reason to the age of stupidity.

(Thanks to Ed for bringing this to my attention).

Muslims and Christians in Lebanon

On August 9, Recliner Commentaries posted "Tolerance, Islamic style" which documents worldwide violence of Muslims against Christians. Muslims who kill Christians do so claiming to follow the teachings of Muhammad himself.

With this in mind we might wonder how Lebaneese Christians are reacting to Muslims in Lebanon who are now homeless. The answer is that Lebaneese Christians are opening their homes to Muslim refugees. "For a month now, Lebanese Christian groups have been housing and feeding thousands of displaced families in their own homes and in places like Beirut Baptist School and the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary" (MNN).

While we need to fight against Islamic terrorism that would seek to destroy Israel and the West, our fight is not against all Muslims. When the Gospel of John says "for God so loved the world..." that includes Muslims too and these Lebaneese Christians are truly acting like Christians.

Armageddon today?

It’s now August 22 in Iran--the day on which many Muslims commemorate the flight of Muhammad to Jerusalem on his winged horse. Many speculate that today may have apocalyptic significance. If you're interested in what the fuss is about, see: ABCNews7, DEBKAfile, WSJ.

Intolerance in California: Bill 1056

“In the California Assembly, there is a relatively unnoticed move to redefine the word tolerance. If Assembly Bill 1056 passes, tolerance will no longer be a passive act, but requires that the target of the bill, school children, actively embrace these alternative lifestyle choices...
(e) For purposes of this article, 'tolerance" means attitudes and behaviors that convey respect toward individuals and groups, especially those individuals and groups that have been, and continue to be, systematically and historically marginalized. Tolerance does not mean a passive allowance or indulgence of the beliefs or practices of another individual.” (ChristianNewsWire)

For all practical purposes, this bill means that historically unmarginalized groups (like white men and Christians) can continue to be maligned and ridiculed, but any speech that conveys anything less than acceptance of and respect for gay behaviors, for example, would be prohibited by law.

Many gay rights leaders do not want tolerance--in fact, they are very intolerant toward anyone who disagrees with them. What they want is for everyone to be forced by law to fully accept and respect their lifestyle choices, or to be punished to the fullest extent of the law (which they intend to create).

Once again tyranny and censorship raise their ugly heads in California.

Muslim Immigration

There was an interesting debate on “The Cost of Freedom” TV program Saturday morning about whether the U.S. should establish tougher rules for Muslim immigration.

Any country has the right to determine who should be able to immigrate. Unless we are going to open our borders to legal immigration for absolutely everyone, choices must be made. Out of every ten slots available for legal immigration, why should slots be allocated to people who would chose to undermine freedom and democracy in favor, for example, of Shari’a law, rather than giving those slots to people who really want freedom?

Does democracy guarantee freedom?

President Bush once said, “We know that democracies do not foment terror or invade their neighbors.” With all due respect to our president, I think he needs to step back and re-think this position. As brilliantly pointed out by Terence Jeffrey, Democracy didn’t stop British Terrorists from plotting to bring down numerous airliners in the name of Islam, the people of Gaza freely elected a terrorist government, and the people of Lebanon elected terrorists to fourteen seats in their government.

It still remains to be seen how “free” democratic Iraq will be but I’m not hopeful. I think the U.S. should do all we can to promote human rights and basic freedoms such as freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, etc. But trying to establish democracies may be misguided. After all, without an enforceable bill of rights, democracies can be just as oppressive as other forms of government.

U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon

According to a FOXNews article, so far Bangladesh has offered the largest number of troops (2,000) to stand between Hezbollah and Israel. Indonesia and Malaysia have also offered to send forces. The article doesn't mention the fact that these countries do not recognize Israel's right to exist. Allowing them to be part of a peacekeeping force may be like sending vultures to keep the Hezbollah wolves from attacking the farm.

How liberal are you?

Hollywood stands against terrorism

For all of my condemnation of Hollywood, I need to applaud them when they get it right--and they got this one right. Nicole Kidman, Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Danny De Vito, and about 80 other Hollywood actors, directors and executives took out a full page ad in today's Los Angeles Times that reads in part:

"We the undersigned are pained and devastated by the civilian casualties in Israel and Lebanon caused by terrorist actions initiated by terrorist organisations such as Hezbollah and Hamas,"

"If we do not succeed in stopping terrorism around the world, chaos will rule and innocent people will continue to die."

"We need to support democratic societies and stop terrorism at all costs."

Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers

“Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says” Kill them, put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]…Islam says” Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the Sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for the Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of others [Qur’anic] psalms and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all this mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

Of course not all Muslims want to “kill all unbelievers” so if I wrote this I would be called an “Islamophobic” bigot. These are not my words, however, but the words of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1900-1989), an Islamic scholar, Islamic political theorist, religious leader for Shi’ite Muslims, and the supreme political/religious ruler of Muslims in Iran. I suspect that he knew more about Islam than liberal multiculturalists in America who want so desperately for Islam to be a religion of peace (Khomeini quote from “A Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam” by Robert Spencer, 191.)

Hezbollah, Iran and Nazi Germany

From Lebanon, to Syria, to Iran, Muslim leaders across the Middle East are publicly and enthusiastically crowing over their imagined victory over Israel. Meanwhile Hezbollah, who, as the puppet of Iran, instigated this whole war and who housed their weapons and military centers among Lebanese civilians in are now providing aid to Lebanese families in an effort to look like the good guys. Already, Lebanese women are naming their babies after Hezbollah leader, Nasrallah.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Saniora and Hezbollah leader Nasrallah “reportedly reached a deal” that would allow Hezbollah to keep its weapons as long as they didn’t show them publicly (isn’t that what they were doing before the war broke out?). And U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said on TV that “dismantling Hizbullah is not the direct mandate of the U.N.” (Jerusalem Post).

All this in spite of the fact that U.N. Resolution 1701 specifically requires “the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon so that…there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state.” Not only that, but U.N. “peacekeepers” may not be in place for up to a year!

The ink is barely dry on U.N. Resolution 1701 and the U.N. is already back to its corrupt, irresponsible ways, and Resolution 1701 doesn’t appear to be worth the paper it was printed on.

I think Israel needs to go back and finish the job on the Iranian puppet, Hezbollah, and the U.S. needs to start positioning warships off Iran in case another “shock and awe” is needed. Iran is Nazi Germany all over again. The longer we longer we stick our head in the sand hoping it will go away, the more endangered western civilization becomes.

Britain and Islamic, “Shari’a” Law

The British government has appealed to moderate Muslim leaders for help in controlling Muslim extremism and the moderates have proposed a solution: establish Shari’a law for Muslims in Britain.

In some countries Shari’a allows for limb amputation for theft and death for such offenses as disrespect for the Qur’an and for converting from Islam to another religion. The British Muslim leaders, however, just want Shari’a for family law, not criminal law, which would allow men to have up to four wives, to beat them and to divorce them simply by saying “I divorce you” three times” (CNS)

These are the “moderate” Muslim leaders in Britain and they are either very clueless or very devious.

First, modern democracies, fortunately, just don’t allow men to have multiple wives, to beat them, or to divorce them with no legal recourse.

Second, many Muslims fled to Europe to get away from oppression by other Muslims and now they want to establish the same kind of oppressive system from which they fled? Amazing!

Third, it is incredibly narcissistic for these Muslim leaders to think that western democratic governments can or should single out one group to be exempt from democratically established laws. Should we allow Christians, Jews and atheists to create and live under special laws for their families as well?

Finally, to think that implementing Shari’a family law would do anything to reduce Muslim radicalism in Britain is absurd. The very proposal sounds like nothing more than an attempt to get the “camel’s nose in the tent” as a way of Shari’a-izing all of Britain.

And this Shari’a proposal is coming from the so-called “moderate” Muslims!

Iran mocks the holocaust

In response to the Danish cartoons that mock Muhammad, Iran just unveiled its display of 200 cartoons mocking the holocaust (AP). These cartoons were the finalists out of 1,200 submitted
(hmm, a Danish newspaper prints cartoons that mock Islam so an Iranian newspaper responds by mocking Jews—do they teach logic in Iran?

Many Americans and Europeans are rightly disgusted by cartoons that ridicule either Muslims or Jews. They condemn such mockery as hate speech while they lay their money down to watch Hollywood movies that mock Christians.

The Associated Press has confirmed that Steve Centanni and and a cameraman from Fox News have been kidnapped when two trucks boxed their vehicle in and took them away by force.

Fox News Journalists kidnapped?

I just learned from LGF that Reuters is reporting that two FOX News journalists may have been kidnapped in Gaza. The story is still developing

Appeasment and cowardice

The following article is making the rounds on the internet (hat tip: J. Wheaton). It was originally published by Mathias Dopfner in the German magazine, Die Welt, November 20, 2004. I wish every politician in Washington would read this:

"A few days ago Henry Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, " Europe - your family name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because it's so terribly true.

Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements.

Appeasement legitimized and stabilized Communism in the Soviet Union , then East Germany , then all the rest of Eastern Europe where for decades, inhuman suppressive, murderous governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities.

Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo, and even though we had absolute proof of ongoing mass-murder, we Europeans debated and debated and debated, and were still debating when finally the Americans had to come from halfway around the world, into Europe yet again, and do our work for us. Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East , European appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance" now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians.

Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore nearly 300,000 victims of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the self-righteousness of the peace-movement, has the gall to issue bad grades to George Bush ... Even as it is uncovered that the loudest critics of the American action in Iraq made illicit billions, no, TENS of billions, in the corrupt U.N. Oil-for-Food program.

And now we are faced with a particularly grotesque form of appeasement. How is Germany reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic fundamentalists in Holland and elsewhere? By suggesting that we really should have a "Muslim Holiday" in Germany ?

I wish I were joking, but I am not. A substantial fraction of our (German) Government, and if the polls are to be believed, the German people, actually believe that creating an Official State "Muslim Holiday" will somehow spare us from the wrath of the fanatical Islamists. One cannot help but recall Britain 's Neville Chamberlain waving the laughable treaty signed by Adolph Hitler , and declaring European "Peace in our time".

What else has to happen before the European public and its political leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims, focused on civilians, directed against our free, open Western societies, and intent upon Western Civilization's utter destruction.

It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than any of the great military conflicts of the last century - a conflict conducted by an enemy that cannot be tamed by "tolerance" and "accommodation" but is actually spurred on by such gestures, which have proven to be, and will always be taken by the Islamists for signs of weakness.

Only two recent American Presidents had the courage needed for anti-appeasement: Reagan and Bush. His American critics may quibble over the detai ls, but we Europeans know the truth. We saw it first hand: Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War, freeing half of the German people from nearly 50 years of terror and virtual slavery. And Bush, supported only by the Social Democrat Blair, acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic War against democracy. His place in history will have to be evaluated after a number of years have passed.

In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic self-confidence in the multicultural corner, instead of defending liberal society's values and being an attractive center of power on the same playing field as the true great powers, America and China.

On the contrary - we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to those arrogant Americans", as the World Champions of "tolerance", which even ( Germany 's Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes.

Why? Because we're so moral? I fear it's more because we're s o materialistic so devoid of a moral compass.

For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt, and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy - because unlike almost all of Europe, Bush realizes what is at stake - literally everything.

While we criticize the "capitalistic robber barons" of America because they seem too sure of their priorities, we timidly defend our Social Welfare systems. Stay out of it! It could get expensive! We'd rather discuss reducing our 35-hour workweek or our dental coverage, or our 4 weeks of paid vacation... Or listen to TV pastors preach about the need to "reach out to terrorists. To understand and forgive".

These days, Europe reminds me of an old woman who, with shaking hands, frantically hides her last pieces of jewelry when she notices a robber breaking into a neighbor's house. Appeasement? Europe , thy name is Cowardice. God Bless America"

According to Snoops, the internet translation of this article from German to English is a slight modification of the original (for example, "God Bless America" does not appear in the original). Both versions, however, make a powerful point which, tragically, many politicians ignore to our peril.

Earthquake money diverted for terror

According to an article in the Counterterrorism Blog:

"An article in today's New York Times suggests that Pakistani investigators have found a possible financial link between those arrested this week in connection with a would-be terrorist plot targeting U.S. airliners and a Pakistani militant group that, until just a few months ago, was raising money directly from the United States through the Wall Street branch of the Bank of New York."

It is really hard to imagine the depth of evil the exists in Muslim extremists who would take money designated for other Muslims suffering, even dying, from earthquake damage, in order to use it to kill hundreds of innocent civilians. One might almost say it is "satanic."

Egyptian "students" captured

All of the eleven missing Egyptian "students" are now in custody (WAVY10) Fox and Friends reported this monring that none of them were a terrorist threat. I'm skeptical. According to DebbieSchlussel.Com:

"Normally, missing aliens are strictly the domain of ICE. But when a case involves terrorism, the FBI is the lead agency. That's pursuant to both a Presidential Executive Order and a Memorandum of Understanding signed by then-Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge and then-Attorney General John Ashcroft."

Maybe the FBI was assigned just because of the potential terrorist threat, but it still seems strange that the FBI could so confidently determine that these "students" posed no threat so soon after their capture.

Iran, Hezbollah, Lebanon and ceasefire

The Lebanese government was scheduled to meet today to discuss plans to move their army into Southern Lebanon in accordance with the U.N. ceasefire. Suddenly, without explanation, the meeting was called off. According to DEBKAfile, the meeting was cancelled because Hezbollah, taking orders from Iran, announced that they would not allow Lebanese forces to be deployed in Southern Lebanon as previously agreed (DEBKAfile).

Syrian deployment?

Fox news just reported that, according to Israeli intelligence, Syria is deploying tanks along the border of the Golan heights. They are also removing land mines.

Iran preparing to attack Israel?

Moments ago on “Heartland with John Kasich” Ghazal Omid made the startling assertion that Iran is actively preparing to attack Israel. Ms. Omid is author of “Living in Hell,” a book about her escape from Iran. She is said to be an expert in Islamic law and Iranian politics.

I have no idea whether her claim is credible, but when it comes to Iran, nothing would surprise me.

Pro-terrorism protests

Today, people in Washington DC, San Francisco, Atlanta, Dallas, and Ann Arbor protested Israel’s involvement in Lebanon. The protests ranged from a few dozen to thousands.

I’m sure people had a variety of motives for attending these protests--ranging from Muslim extremism, to anti-Israel hatred, to anti-war ideology to genuine concern for the Lebanese people. Regardless of the motivation, the actual result is support for Hezbollah terrorism.

World Trade Center movie

I saw the World Trade Center movie on Wednesday. My reaction was mixed. Some reviewers have severely criticized the movie for omitting all references to terrorists, Islam, Muslim extremists, Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda, etc. I tend to agree that this was annoying, but on the other hand, the movie focuses entirely on the events of September 11 and 12, and I’m not sure we knew exactly who was involved that early, did we?

I thought the movie was very well done as it follows the lives of men who were trapped in the collapse of the World Trade Center—and the anxiety of their families who waited in the agony of not knowing. On the other hand, like “Saving Private Ryan,” this movie was not one I “enjoyed,” but one I “experienced” or “endured.” I did not find it nearly as uplifting as some of its advertisements indicated. Maybe that’s as it should be.

Middle East Conflict: the root cause

Once again, Dennis Prager hits the nail on the head in his analysis of the Middle East conflict. Until the world comes to grips with the root cause of the conflict, they are just treating cancer with aspirin. Below are the first three paragraphs of Dennis Prager’s excellent article:

“The Middle East conflict is difficult to solve, but it is among the simplest conflicts in history to understand.”

“The Arab and other Muslim enemies of Israel (for the easily confused, this does not mean every Arab or every Muslim) want Israel destroyed. That is why there is a Middle East conflict. Everything else is commentary.”

“Those who deny this and ascribe the conflict to other reasons, such as "Israeli occupation," "Jewish settlements," a "cycle of violence," "the Zionist lobby" and the like, do so despite the fact that Israel's enemies regularly announce the reason for the conflict. The Iranian regime, Hizbollah, Hamas and the Palestinians -- in their public opinion polls, in their anti-Semitic school curricula and media, in their election of Hamas, in their support for terror against Israeli civilians in pre-1967 borders -- as well as their Muslim supporters around the world, all want the Jewish state annihilated.”

Terror in Dearbornistan

"Why is the mother of a terrorist working at the airport? [In Detroit]. And why does she have passenger lists and info on airport security? Why did she give them to her son?" Debbie Schlussel asks these questions and provides some disturbing answers on her blog, DebbieSchlussel.Com.

London airline bombing plot

For the latest analysis on the London airline bombing plot, see the Counterterrorism Blog posted about 25 minutes ago.

Six Egyptian students found

Reuters just reported that six of the eleven missing Egyptian students have now been captured and that none of them posed a terror threat.

I'd like to know how someone was able to determine that so quickly.

Terror attack--a dry run?

I got this e-mail about 60 seconds ago from CBSNews:

"The terrorist attack foiled by British authorities was aimed at blowing up
as many as 10 airplanes on trans-Atlantic flights, and plotters hoped to
stage a dry run within two days, according to U.S. intelligence officials.
The actual attack would have followed within days."

Missing Egyptian students and airliner plot

According to AXessNews.Com, three of the eleven Egyptian students who were supposed to be going to Montana State University have been captured in Minnesota and New Jersey. Eight more are at large. Is anyone exploring the possiblity that these "students" may have been part of the airliner plot which is in the news this morning?

Terrorist plot thwarted--we hope

For those of you who rushed off to work without checking the news this moring:

"British authorities said Thursday they had thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, averting what police described as "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" (ABCNews).

Fox News sources say al Qaeda is involved and that the investigation is still underway. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has raised the threat level to red (the second highest level) for all commercial flights originating from Britain (Washington Post), a move that may not be necessary now since Fox news just reported that England has now cancelled ALL flights to and from Great Britain. The story is still developing.

Brokaw predicts WMD discovery

According to a report published yesterday, former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw, citing un-named reliable sources, predicts that investigators may soon find Iraq’s long lost WMD’s, possibly as early as this month.

I won’t hold my breath but I hope he’s right. If WMD’s are found I’m sure all the Lieberman haters, Sheehan supporters and Michael Moore lovers will immediately apologize for their anti-Bush, anti-war, anti-American hysterics—I’m as sure of that as I am that pigs will fly.

Islamic justice--Indonesian style

From 1988 – 2003 Muslims initiated a conflict with Christians in Indonesia in which entire Christian villages and 1,000 churches were burned to the ground. When it was over, 10,000 Christians were murdered. On June 19, 2000 over 200 Christian men, women and children were slaughtered in the Halmahera Evangelical Church alone. To date, not a single Muslim has ever been charged these atrocities—but, International Christian Concern has just been informed that three Christians will be executed this Saturday for their role in the conflict! (Christian Newswire).

Where was the international outrage when all this was going on? Where was the media? Where are the death penalty opponents now?

"Tolerance," Islamic style

The following are examples of "tolerance," Islamic style, summarized from the archives of Compass Direct, a news service that chronicles Christian persecution:

Two Christian health workers were providing health care and AIDS prevention services for people in Bangladesh when they were hacked to death on July 29. Police and local officials blame Islamic extremists (August 3, 23, 2005).

In Indonesia three Christian women were sentenced by an Indonesia court to three years in prison for allowing Muslim children to attend their Sunday School, even though the children had their parents’ permission. The women’s lives have been threatened by Muslims (September 1, 2005).

In Lahore, Pakistan, a heroin addict disrupted an Islamic service and was accused of insulting Muhammad (a capital offense). In response, a mob of 200 Muslim protesters ransacked at least 16 Christian homes, stoned the church and threw Bibles on the floor. Police did nothing to stop the attacks (September 13, 2005).

A Pakistani Christian women testified in court that two Muslim men drugged, kidnapped and raped her, threatening to shoot her and kill her family if she did not convert to Islam. She said she’d rather die. The next morning her captors turned her over to another Muslim man who raped her for the next three days (September 27, 2005).

A Malaysian court has ruled that Lina Joy, a former Muslim who converted to Christianity, must apply to a sharia court for permission to legally renounce Islam in order to have the Muslim designation removed from her identity card. This designation prevents her from marrying a Christian (September 29, 2005).

In Nigeria, Kano state authorities demolished the Deeper Life Bible church (October 17). Christians in Kano are afraid to send their children to public schools for fear that they will be forced to convert to Islam. The government refuses to allow churches to establish their own schools in these rural areas. Christian leaders there say Christians are seen as second class citizens in this Muslim society and in one case, 15 Christians were forced to leave their homes in the Banda village because of Muslim antagonism (October 19, 2005).

In Janbashkala, Uzbekistan Christians are beaten, publicly humiliated, and hounded out of their homes and jobs for converting to Christianity (October 20, 2005).

In Faisalabad, Pakistan two men are accused of raping a 22 year old Catholic woman and threatening to kill both her and her family unless she converted to Islam. One of the suspects was arrested but later escaped (as police looked on). Both the woman and her lawyer have since received threatening phone calls from the perpetrator (October 28, 2005).

In Niger, Sardauna Anaruwa Sashi was a staunch Muslim until earlier this year when he converted to Christianity. He was arrested and severely tortured for four days until a Christian lawyer was able to intervene. Local Muslims have vowed to kill him (October 31, 2005).

Religious violence broke out in the Tungan Rogo village in Niger leaving three Christians dead after a Muslim cut off the hand of a Christian. Muslims later stormed the halls of the Federal University of Technology in an effort to enforce sharia law (November 1, 2005).

Just ten days after three Christian teenage girls were beheaded in Indonesia, unidentified assailants shot two senior high school students in the Poso district (November 9). A few days later on November 18, two women and one man were attacked with machetes and the next day, November 19, motorbike riders shot a man and woman as they left a church service (November 21, 2005).

In Iran a convert to Christianity was kidnapped, stabbed to death, and his bloody body dumped in front of his home. The local secret police arrived within hours—to search the home for Bibles and other banned Christian books. According to one source, in the last eight days ten Christians have been arrested and severely tortured in Iranian cities including Tehran (November 28, 2005).

For two years Pastor Habib had been repeatedly jailed and tortured by Egyptian police until October when a parked taxi suddenly pulled into the street and struck him from behind as he crossed the street. He died the next day (December 2, 2005).

In Pakistan’s Punjab province, Muslim clerics flanked by government officials demanded the public execution of a Christian accused of blasphemy. After being accused of burning pages from the Qur’an, Muslim rioters burned four churches and police tortured four of the Christian’s brothers until he surrendered himself to the authorities to gain their release. Witnesses say the charges are false (December 8, 2005).

In Pakistan a Christian man was tortured to death by Muslim seminary students in an attempt to get him to convert to Islam. The man’s father has requested police protection due to death threats by Muslim clerics who want him to drop the charges (December 21, 2005, January 18, 2006).

In Turkey’s fourth largest city, five young men attacked a protestant church leader, threatening to kill him with a knife unless he denied Jesus and converted to Islam. He was eventually beaten and beating him unconscious (January 20, 2006).

One Christian died when Muslims set fire to a Christian community center near the city of Luxor. (January 20, 2006).

A 60 year old Catholic priest was shot twice in the back in Trabzon, Turkey. As his assailant fled he recited the part of the Muslim call to prayer. The assailant later said he shot the priest in retaliation for the Danish cartoons (February 7, 2006).

A seventy year old Christian woman ended up with broken legs as a Muslim mob attacked the village chapel, smashing the alter, breaking windows and burning Bibles. Police refused to process the official complaint (February 8, 2006).

Muslims threatened to cut off the head of a female Christian student in Nigeria’s Sokoto state. She was accused of blasphemy and is now missing and some suspect that she was kidnapped (February 14, 2006).

In the Pakistani province of Sindh, 500 Muslims with gasoline bombs burned down two churches and a school because of rumors that a Christian threw a copy of a Qur’an in a trash can. Local sources say the charge is false. In Kasur, several thousand Muslims attacked a Christian girls’ school and attempted to attack the city’s Catholic church because of the Danish cartoons (February 20, 2006).

In Sangla Hill, Pakistan a man was declared innocent of blasphemy charges due to alleged burning of a Qur’an. The news triggered a mob of 2,000 Muslims to destroy four Sangla Hill churches (February 23, 2006).

Muslim rioters killed 10 Christians and burned nine churches in central Nigeria because of the Danish cartoons (February 24, 2006).

In Bauchi, Nigeria a student was expelled for allegedly blaspheming Muhammad. Five Muslims later broke into her home. When they didn’t find her, they raped her older sister (March 6, 2006).

In West Java a local Muslim Council has warned Christians to stop meeting together in private homes, which is increaslingly the only way Christians can meet since permits for new churches are never granted (March 21). Over 60 churches in West Java have been closed in the last two and a half years for lack of permits. In Bogor, West Java, a mob of about 200 Muslims forced Christians out of their church services one Sunday morning (March 27, 2006).

A Christian teacher in the state school in the Bauchi State in Nigeria was simply maintaining classroom discipline when she took a Qur’an away from a student who was reading it rather than paying attention to the lesson. Other students jumped on the tables and began throwing books at the teacher charging her with defiling the Qur’an. More than 20 Christians were killed in the aftermath (March 28, 2006)

Two female Christian students at a university in Kaduna, Nigeria, were beaten unconscious by a group of Muslim women have since disappeared (April 10). Muslim students regularly terrorize Christian students in this university (April 10, 2006).

Mobs of Muslims ranging from 150 to 500 forced churches to cease services in North Jakarta, West Java and Tangerang, Indonesia (May 2, 2006).

The Muslim militia leader who commands several hundred soldiers in Shatt Damam, Sudan, forced Christians to abandon their church which was half-built after it went up in flames after Christmas last year (May 3, 2006).

On May 10 seven suspected Islamic terrorists have confessed to beheading three Indonesian schoolgirls last October (May 12, 2006)

A Muslim girl who had been missing for two months reported to police that she ran away because her Muslim father had been beating her for spending time with Christians (May 17, 23, 2006).

On June 9, ten Saudi Arabian police armed with wooden clubs raided a private Christian worship meeting and arrested the four worship leaders (Jun 15, 2006).

Sehar Muhammad Shafi and her husband fled their home in Karachi, Pakistan after being attacked and raped for converting to Christianity (Jun 23, 2006).

In Malaysia hotels have refused to host a series of religious rights forums after angry protestors shut down the event and accused the organizers of being “enemies of Islam” (June 28, 2006).

A Pakistani Christian has appealed for asylum in Holland after facing police torture and attacks by Muslims (June 30, 2006).

Muslims overwhelmed police officers and stoned/clubbed a Christian woman to death for doing street evangelism in a town in the country of Niger (July 6, 2006).

Fifteen year old Yohanna Anche has been suffering from a brain injury for two years now after receiving a machete cut to his head when Muslim students attacked Christian students at his high school in Zaria City, Nigeria. Seven other Christian students were injured as well (July 10, 2006).

A Christian woman in Pakistan has gone into hiding after here husband beat her every day for two months for not reading the Qur’an (July 19, 2006).

Christians are commanded by Jesus to do good to those who hate us and pray for those who persecute us, but America should not be misled--Islam, as practiced by millions around the world, is anything but tolerant.

U.S. Soldiers, rape and murder

On “The Big Story” with John Gibson, Judge Andrew Napolitano just discussed the U.S. soldiers who are facing charges for killing an Iraqi family. Judge Napolitano said that the soldiers—in a crime that was pre-planned—allegedly took turns raping a 14 year old Iraqi girl in front of her family before killing the entire family. The judge says the evidence against the soldiers (which includes confessions to other soldiers) is overwhelming.

Of course these soldiers have the right to be presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law, but hypothetically speaking, if they really did these unspeakably horrible things, and if they really planned this atrocity ahead of time, how could anyone exclude the death penalty from consideration?

If I had my way, they would be stripped of their U.S. citizenship and turned over to local Iraqis for whatever punishment they might want to dish out (if we actually did that, I’m sure these soldiers would come to think of the death penalty as very humane).

Jihadists’ philosophy of war

In Haaretz, Bradley Burston summarizes the way Jihadists’ seem to view war:

1. If I kill you, I win.

2. If you kill me, I am a martyr. I win big.

3. There are no innocents in the land of my enemy. If I kill infants, the elderly, pregnant women, even on purpose, I win.

4. When my enemy kills innocent civilians in error, even his own allies condemn him for brutality. I win. (Hat tip: Unsealed Room)

More journalistic photo fraud?

A few days ago, Reuters was caught in a photo fraud. Is BBC next? See Jihad Watch.

U.N. Hypocrisy

In a letter to the editor in today's, Miami Herald, Robert J. Singer asks, "Why is the United Nations so obsessed with the death of Muslim terrorists in Lebanon while ignoring Muslim-terrorist genocide in Darfur, Sudan?"

Good question. For some reason the U.N. seems to ignore a lot of violent Muslim atrocities all over the world. Why is that?

Liberals in Wonderland

In an outstanding article, Ana Torres-Gill points out that in many ways Israel embodies the ideals of “progressives” yet many progressives seem to be supporting Hezbollah. The author writes,

"I seem to have fallen down the rabbit hole and emerged in a city where some self-proclaimed progressives are more at ease rationalizing terrorism and repressive governments, but uncomfortable supporting democracies. When did it become trendy for some to spit out immediate and myopic condemnations of Israel while selectively blinding oneself to the atrocities and failures of the other darling underdogs of the Middle East? The irony is that progressives have more in common with the State of Israel than with those dedicated to its destruction."

Death threat from Reuters

Charles Johnson, the owner of the excellent Little Green Footballs blog is used to getting hate mail. This one was different, however. It said, "I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut." What was different about it? The threat was sent from a Reuters News Service IP address! The employee has since been suspended (YNet News).

More peaceful Muslims

Associated Press correspondents are reporting that hundreds of thousands of Shiites marched on Baghdad today in support of Hezbollah and against Israel and America. American and Israeli flags were burned as were effigies of President Bush and Prime Minister Olmert.

Demonstrators chanted “Allah, Allah, give victory to Hassan Nasrallah.” Many demonstrators wore white shrouds symbolizing their willingness to die for Hezbollah. No violence was reported during this demonstration in favor of violent terrorists (My Way).

Islam, the peaceful religion

Karen Armstrong has written numerous books and articles favorable to Islam. David Thompson, however, takes issue with her interpretation. A quote appears below:

"According to Armstrong, Mohammed was, above all, a “peacemaker” who “respected” Jews and other non-Muslims. Yet nowhere in the Qur’an and Sunnah does Mohammed refer to non-Muslims as in any way deserving of respect as equals. Quite the opposite, in fact. Apparently, we are to ignore 1400 years of Islamic history contradicting Armstrong’s view, and to ignore the contents of the Qur’an and the explicitly anti-Semitic ‘revelations’ of Islam’s founder. Has Armstrong not read Ibn Ishaq’s quasi-sacred biography of Mohammed? Has she not read the Hadiths? Does she not know of the massacre of the Banu Qurayza and the opportunist raids against the Bani Quainuqa, Bani Nadir and Bani Isra’il and other Jewish tribes? Does she not know how these events were justified as a divine duty, one which formed the theological basis of the Great Jihad of Abu Bakr, setting in motion one of the most formidable military expansions in Islamic history? Does she not know how these theological ideas established Jews and Christians’ subordinate legal status throughout much of the Islamic world for hundreds of years?"

A new civil right… pedophilia

An Ohio man is charged with “74 counts of rape, drugs and pandering obscenity to minors.” Far from denying the charges, the man admits that he has been a pedophile for 20 years and claims that his home “was a religious sanctuary where smoking marijuana and having sex with children are sacred rituals protected by civil rights laws.” He is charged with molesting and raping young disabled boys, some "so helpless they could never tell anyone what happened." He actually video taped some of his crimes. If convicted he faces mandatory life in prison (NBC10.Com).

Why should society have to pay to feed, cloth, house and provide medical care for the rest of this evil pervert's life (which could be a long time since he's only 34)? Wouldn’t it be more “just” to execute him and use the money that would have been spent on his imprisonment to provide psychological care for his victims and their families?

There are some rare cases in which I question the constitutional guarantee against “cruel and unusual punishment.” This is one of those cases.

Long range missiles

Reuters news service is reporting this morning that "North Korea has been working closely with Iran to develop its long-range ballistic missiles, possibly using Chinese technology, and is building large bases to prepare for their deployment..."

Inside Hezbollah

A recent story in the Guardian gives an inside look into Hezbollah. Excerpts appear below. How do you negotiate with people who have been trained from childhood to hate the west and to embrace martyrdom?

"Inside a well-furnished apartment in a village on the outskirts of Tyre, with shelves of books piled from floor to ceiling, a black turbaned cleric and three men sit sipping bitter coffee. By the door is a pile of Kalashnikovs and ammunition boxes; handguns are tucked into the men's trousers. The four are Hizbullah fighters, waiting for the Israelis."

"We don't take anyone who knocks at our door and says 'I want to join'. We raise our fighters. We take them when they are young kids and raise them to become Hizbullah fighters. Every fighter we have believes that the ultimate form of being is martyrdom."

"He and his fellow fighters have been preparing for the latest conflict with the Israelis for years and he acknowledges the support received from Iran."

"If they want to kill Hizbullah they have to kill every Shia in the south of Lebanon."

"And even when the battle with the Israelis is over, he adds menacingly, Hizbullah will have other battles to fight. The real battle is after the end of this war. We will have to settle score with the Lebanese politicians. We also have the best security and intelligence apparatus in this country, and we can reach any of those people who are speaking against us now. Let's finish with the Israelis and then we will settle scores later."

Islam in Indonesia

Check out Little Green Footballs for pictures of a Muslim parade in Indonesia. Repeat after me: Islam is a peaceful religion.

Is this the face of moderate Islam?

While the media is rightly concerned about Mel Gibson’s drunken anti-Semitic slurs, they missed or ignored a far more serious event. Last Sunday, columnist and blogger Debbie Schlussel attended a little gathering of Muslims at the Bint Jebail Cultural Center in Dearborn Michigan. The Associate Press reported that 1,000 Muslims attended (the legal capacity of the room) but Ms. Schlussel is convinced that it was more like 2,500 to 3,000. Ms. Schlussel wears her bias on her sleeve but if even half of what she reports is accurate, she has much to be biased about and America has much to be concerned about.

According to Ms. Schlussel, the meeting was nothing less than a “Nazi-style hate fest.” The Lebanese Consul General in Detroit, Dr. Ali Ajami, “delivered a fire-and-brimstone anti-Semitic tirade.” Imam Mohammed Ali Elahi’s speech declared that Americans and Jews are “diseased.” When the “Founding Chairman of the Bint Jebail Cultural Center, gleefully and repeatedly spoke of how ‘only a few thousand Jews will survive Armageddon’ he received “raucous, deafening applause and cheers.” “Throughout the speeches there were cheers and statements of support from the crowd for Hezbollah and against Jews.” (FrontPage.Com)

This was apparently not just a private little gathering of fringe bigots. Ms. Schlussel reports that “Every imam of every Shi'ite mosque in town was there,” including the Imams of the two largest mosques in North America. It sounds like Mel Gibson is not the only one who needs to issue some apologies—especially since these speakers were sober! Is this the face of moderate Islam in America?

What happened at Qana?

If you're interested in what happened a Qana, Lebanon, you'll definitely want to check out the Step-by-Step blog for today, August 1.

Anyone for Sharia Law?

A New York Times article published today gives a glimpse of Sharia or Islamic law as enforced in the Indonesian province of Banda Aceh. Here are the three paragraphs:

"BANDA ACEH, Indonesia — Across this most religious of Indonesia’s provinces, brown uniformed policemen in black wagons enforce Shariah, or Islamic law. They haul unmarried couples into precincts and arrest people for drinking or gambling. Increasingly, many of the cases are pushed to the ultimate conclusion, public canings at mosques in front of pumped-up crowds. "

"In mid-July, a 27-year-old man sentenced to 40 lashes fainted on the seventh stroke of a rattan cane from a hooded man in the yard of a mosque here in the provincial capital."

"The caning was televised nationally, with an announcer reporting that the man, who had been arrested for drinking at a beachside stall, would receive the remainder of his punishment once he had recovered. "

Qana: Another explanation

Confederate Yankee (July 31) has a different explanation for what happened in Qana, Lebanon. His pictures are not for the squeamish and his arguments are far from conclusive—but they do indicate that perhaps the world should have waited before rushing to judgment in condemning Israel (hat tip: LGF).
